The best places to travel in October are Kyoto and Tokyo in crisp autumn, Jordan and Morocco as their prime season reopens, Egypt with the heat finally breaking, and New England at peak foliage.
October is the great reopening. The desert-belt destinations that summer locked away, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and soon the Gulf, return to comfortable temperatures, making this the start of their prime season. Japan and Korea settle into crisp, clear autumn, the most comfortable big-city weather of their year. The Mediterranean holds warm through the first half of the month, especially in Greece, southern Spain, and Portugal.
In the United States, October is foliage's main event: New England typically peaks in the first half of the month, the Rockies' aspens go gold, and the Balloon Fiesta lifts hundreds of hot-air balloons over Albuquerque in early October. National park weather across the Southwest hits its second sweet spot of the year.
The cautions are specific. The Caribbean remains inside hurricane season until the end of November, with October still carrying real late-season risk.
