Islands Safe From Hurricane Season: Where to Go From June to November

You do not have to give up on islands from June to November. You just have to leave the storm track.

The straight answer

The safest islands during Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) are Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, which sit south of the usual storm track, plus islands that never see Atlantic storms, like the Canaries, the Galapagos, Bali, Fiji, and Tahiti in their dry seasons.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most activity from mid August to mid October. Most of the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Florida sit inside the main storm track. That does not mean every trip is ruined, but it does mean travel insurance, flexible bookings, and a real chance of disruption at the peak.

The alternatives fall into two groups. A few Caribbean islands sit south of where storms usually track, most famously Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, along with Caribbean Panama. And many of the world's best islands are simply in a different ocean or climate, where June to October is actually the dry season: the Canaries, Madeira, and the Mediterranean, the Galapagos, and in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Bali, Fiji, Tahiti, and Zanzibar.

Low risk is not zero risk. Tropical storms occasionally brush even the ABC islands, and the South Pacific and Indian Ocean have their own cyclone seasons, roughly November to April. The windows below are chosen to avoid both.

Aruba

Southern Caribbean

Aruba sits off the coast of Venezuela, south of the path most hurricanes take, and direct hits are rare. It is dry and breezy all year, so a September trip here looks much like a February one, often at lower prices.

Bonaire

Southern Caribbean, Dutch Caribbean

The least developed of the ABC islands, with flamingos on the salt pans, a protected marine park all around the coast, and some of the best shore diving in the world. Calm, clear water through late summer and fall makes this the Caribbean's best hurricane-season dive trip.

Curacao

Southern Caribbean, Dutch Caribbean

The UNESCO-listed pastel waterfront of Willemstad, dozens of small cove beaches on the west coast, and a real local food scene. Like its neighbors, it sits south of the main hurricane belt, though passing tropical storms can bring heavy rain.

Bocas del Toro

Caribbean coast, Panama

Panama sits south of the hurricane track, and Bocas del Toro has an unusual rain pattern: September and October are among its drier months, the opposite of most of the Caribbean. Expect overwater hotels, dolphins in Bahia de los Delfines, and red frogs on the islands.

Galapagos Islands

Ecuador

The Galapagos never see hurricanes. June to November is the cooler garua season, with gray skies and rougher seas, but the cold Humboldt current brings the richest marine life, and blue-footed boobies do their courtship dances in these months.

Canary Islands

Spain, off northwest Africa

Atlantic hurricanes almost never reach the Canaries, and summer and fall are warm and dry, with highs near 79F (26C) and the sea at its warmest in September and October. Tenerife's Teide National Park and Lanzarote's volcanic vineyards are good year-round.

Quick answers

Which Caribbean islands are safe during hurricane season?

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are the safest because they sit south of the typical hurricane track, and direct hits are rare. Caribbean Panama, including Bocas del Toro, is also usually outside the main path. No island is completely risk-free, so travel insurance is still a good idea.

When is peak hurricane season?

The Atlantic season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but most major storms form between mid August and mid October, with September the most active month on average. June, July, and November carry much lower risk.

Is it worth traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season?

It can be. Prices drop and crowds thin, and on any given week the odds of a hurricane at a specific island are low. The trade-off is that a storm anywhere nearby can cancel flights or bring days of rain. If you go in September or October, book refundable rates and buy travel insurance before a storm is named.

Where is the best beach weather in September?

Outside the Caribbean, September is excellent in the Mediterranean (Sardinia, Crete, the Greek islands), the Canaries, Bali, Fiji, and Zanzibar. Inside it, the ABC islands and Bocas del Toro are the safest bets.
