The straight answer
The best time to visit Panama is mid December through April, the dry season on the Pacific side, when Panama City, the canal, and the Pacific islands get sunny days and little rain.
Go from mid December through April. Panamanians call this dry season verano, summer, and it is when Panama City, the canal, the Pearl Islands, and the highlands around Boquete get steady sunshine and breezes. Highs in the city sit near 88F (31C) year-round, so the dry season is about rain, not temperature. January through March is the most reliable stretch.
Panama sits south of the main hurricane belt, which makes the rainy season (roughly May through November) less of a gamble than in much of the Caribbean. Rain usually comes as heavy afternoon downpours, and October and November are the wettest months. The Caribbean side runs on a different pattern: Bocas del Toro is wet much of the year but tends to have drier spells in September and October and again in February and March, which makes it a good counter-season pick when the Pacific is soaked.
The country packs a lot into a small space. Panama City's skyline and Casco Viejo's restored old town sit minutes from rainforest on the canal's banks. The Guna Yala (San Blas) islands on the Caribbean are run by the Indigenous Guna people and offer simple island stays. Boquete in the western highlands is coffee country with cool mountain air. Timing each piece to the dry season is the main planning task.

Why go to Panama
The Panama Canal
Watching a giant cargo ship rise through the locks at Miraflores or Agua Clara is a genuine engineering marvel. You can also ride through the locks yourself on partial transit boat trips, which run on select days.
Casco Viejo
Panama City's UNESCO-listed old town has been restored into a district of plazas, rooftop bars, churches, and restaurants, with the modern skyline across the bay.
Rainforest next to a capital
Soberania National Park and the Pipeline Road are within an hour of downtown and are among the best birding spots in the Americas.
Island escapes on two oceans
Guna Yala (San Blas) on the Caribbean, Bocas del Toro's laid-back archipelago, and the Pearl Islands on the Pacific give very different island experiences.
Highland coffee country
Boquete, near Volcan Baru, grows some of the world's most prized coffee, including Geisha varieties. Cooler air and cloud forest hikes come with it.
Things to do, and when to do them
Miraflores Locks Visitor Center
The closest view of ships moving through the Pacific locks, with a museum and observation decks. Ship traffic is often heaviest in the morning and late afternoon.
Casco Viejo
Walk the old town in the early morning or at sunset; the heat makes midday wandering hard. The rooftops at night are the best views of the skyline.
Biomuseo
A Frank Gehry-designed museum on the Amador Causeway about how the Isthmus of Panama changed the planet's biodiversity.
Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)
Simple stays on small islands managed by the Guna people. Visitor fees apply and facilities are basic; go in the dry season when seas are calmer.
Bocas del Toro
Caribbean islands with snorkeling, surf, and a relaxed pace. Its best weather often comes when the rest of Panama is at its rainiest.
Boquete and Volcan Baru
Coffee farm tours, hanging bridges, and the predawn climb to Panama's highest point, from which both oceans are visible on clear days.
Soberania National Park and Pipeline Road
World-class birding within an hour of the city. Start at dawn for the most activity.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Carnival
The four days before Ash Wednesday, February or early March
Panama's biggest party. Las Tablas hosts the most famous celebration; Panama City largely empties as locals travel.
Feria de las Flores y del Cafe (Boquete)
Mid January, most years
Boquete's flower and coffee fair, with gardens, food stalls, and big local crowds. Book rooms early.
Humpback whale season
Roughly July through October
Southern Hemisphere humpbacks visit the Pacific coast, especially around the Pearl Islands and Coiba.
Fiestas Patrias
November 3, 10, and 28 every year
Independence from Colombia on November 3 and other patriotic days bring parades and marching bands across the country.
Beat the crowds
- Visit the Miraflores Locks on a weekday morning and check the canal's published transit schedule; watching a big ship pass is the point.
- For San Blas, go midweek; weekends bring many visitors from Panama City.
- For a wet-season trip, pair the city with Bocas del Toro in September or October, when the Caribbean side is often drier.
- Late April, after Semana Santa, keeps most of the dry-season sun at noticeably lower prices.
Open or closed
- During Carnival, many Panama City businesses close or run reduced hours as locals travel to the interior and the beaches.
- Semana Santa brings closures on Thursday and Friday and very busy beaches.
- Guna Yala is governed by the Guna people, who set their own fees and rules and sometimes close the region to visitors for community reasons. Check before booking.
- The rainy season can delay small plane and boat transfers to the islands, especially in October and November.
With kids in tow
- The canal locks, the Biomuseo, and the rainforest make Panama City unusually good for school-age kids.
- Heat and humidity are constant in the lowlands; plan outdoor time for morning and evening and build in pool time.
- Boquete's cooler climate, zip lines, and coffee farm tours are a welcome break for families.
- For homeschool families, Panama is an ideal lesson in engineering, geography, and biodiversity: the canal, the land bridge between continents, and two oceans in one day.
Getting there
- Tocumen International (PTY) is the hub for Copa Airlines, with nonstops from many US cities including Houston, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago, and New York.
- From Texas: nonstops from Houston and Dallas take about four hours.
- Domestic flights connect Panama City with Bocas del Toro, David (for Boquete), and the San Blas airstrips; San Blas is also reached by 4x4 and boat.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
