The straight answer
The best time to visit Medellin is December through March or June through August, the two drier stretches, with early August adding the Feria de las Flores and December bringing the city's famous Christmas lights.
Go in December through March or in June through August. Medellin sits in a valley at about 4,900 feet, so highs hover near 80F (27C) and lows near 62F (17C) in every month of the year. The seasons are defined by rain: two drier stretches, and two wetter ones from roughly April to May and October to November. Even in the wet months, rain usually falls as an afternoon or evening storm, so a Medellin trip is rarely ruined by weather.
The festival calendar is the bigger factor. The Feria de las Flores in early August is the city's signature event, with the silleteros parade carrying huge flower arrangements on their backs. In December, the Alumbrados Navidenos light up the Medellin River and parks with millions of lights through early January, and Colombians travel in huge numbers. Both periods bring the highest hotel prices of the year.
Medellin is also a base for the surrounding Antioquia region. Guatape and the Penol rock are a day trip, the coffee town of Jardin is a few hours south, and Parque Arvi's forest is a cable car ride above the city. Dry months make all of those trips easier, since mountain roads can be slowed by landslides in the heavier rains.

Why go to Medellin
Perfect weather all year
Highs near 80F (27C) and cool nights every month make Medellin one of the most comfortable cities in the world to explore on foot.
A transformation you can see
The Metrocable gondolas, outdoor escalators in Comuna 13, and libraries in hillside neighborhoods tell the story of a city that remade itself after the violence of the 1980s and 1990s.
Art in the streets and museums
Botero's sculptures fill Plaza Botero outside the Museo de Antioquia, and Comuna 13's murals are one of the best street art walks in South America.
Mountains on the doorstep
Parque Arvi's forest, the colorful town of Guatape and its giant rock, and coffee farms are all within easy reach.
Things to do, and when to do them
Comuna 13
Visit with a local guide from the neighborhood to understand the history behind the murals and escalators. Mornings are less crowded.
Metrocable and Parque Arvi
Ride the cable cars up over the hillside neighborhoods to the Arvi forest park. Line L to Arvi is usually closed on Mondays.
Museo de Antioquia and Plaza Botero
Botero's largest collection in his hometown, with 23 bronze sculptures in the plaza outside. Keep valuables close in the busy downtown area.
Guatape and El Penol
A day trip to climb the 740 steps of the Penol rock and wander the brightly painted town. Go midweek; weekends are packed.
Museo Casa de la Memoria
A moving museum about Colombia's armed conflict and the city's recovery.
Jardin Botanico
A free botanical garden with an orchid house near the university. A calm break from the city.
El Poblado and Laureles
The two neighborhoods most visitors stay in: Poblado for nightlife and restaurants, Laureles for a more local, walkable feel.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Feria de las Flores
Late July into early August, about ten days
The silleteros parade is the highlight, with farmers from Santa Elena carrying giant flower displays on their backs. Also concerts, horse parades, and vintage car shows.
Alumbrados Navidenos
Late November or early December through early January
Millions of lights along the Medellin River and in parks across the city. Evenings are crowded with families.
Semana Santa
The week before Easter, March or April
Processions in the city and nearby colonial towns like Santa Fe de Antioquia.
Beat the crowds
- For the Feria de las Flores, book hotels months ahead and reserve a seat in the stands for the silleteros parade.
- Visit Guatape and Comuna 13 on weekdays; weekends are packed with local visitors.
- See the Christmas lights on a weeknight in early December, before the holiday crowds peak.
- February and September are quiet months with good weather and lower prices.
Open or closed
- Colombia has many Monday public holidays that bring heavy weekend crowds to Guatape and nearby towns.
- Parque Arvi and the Arvi Metrocable line usually close on Mondays; check current hours.
- Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day close many businesses, while the days before are festive and busy.
- Heavy rain in April, May, October, and November can cause landslides and road closures in the surrounding mountains.
With kids in tow
- The Metrocable rides, Parque Explora science museum, and the botanical garden make Medellin easy with kids.
- The mild climate is a big plus for families: no brutal heat and no need for air conditioning in most places.
- Guatape's Penol rock has 740 steps; it is fine for active kids but pace it for younger ones.
- For homeschool families, Medellin is a strong case study in urban transformation, and a good place for Spanish immersion.
Getting there
- Jose Maria Cordova International (MDE) is in Rionegro, about 45 minutes to an hour from the city by road, with nonstops from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, and Atlanta, among others.
- From Texas: connect through Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Panama City, or Bogota.
- The smaller Olaya Herrera airport in the city handles some regional flights.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
