The straight answer
The best time to visit Belize is late November through April, the dry season, with February through April offering the calmest seas, clearest water, and driest jungle trails.
Go from late November through April. That is Belize's dry season, when highs sit in the low to mid 80sF (28C to 29C), humidity is manageable, the seas inside the barrier reef are calm, and jungle roads to the Maya sites and caves are passable. February through April is the driest stretch and the best for diving the Blue Hole and snorkeling Hol Chan. March through June adds the whale shark aggregations at Gladden Spit around the full moons.
The rainy season runs roughly June through November, and it varies sharply by region. The south, around Placencia and the Toledo District, gets far more rain than the north and the cayes. June and July often bring heavy but short afternoon downpours with sunny mornings in between, and prices drop. The real risk window is August through October, the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, when tropical storms can shut down boat trips and the ATM cave closes after heavy rain.
Belize is small but split into two distinct trips. The cayes (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker) and the Placencia peninsula are about the water: reef snorkeling, diving, and fishing. The Cayo District in the west is about jungle, rivers, caves, and Maya ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol. Most first trips do a few nights of each, which makes the dry season, when both halves are at their best, the clear winner.

Why go to Belize
The largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere
The Belize Barrier Reef runs nearly the length of the country and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and the outer atolls give easy access to healthy coral and big marine life.
The Great Blue Hole
A near-perfect circular sinkhole more than 400 feet deep on Lighthouse Reef. The dive is for certified divers; the flyover is the way to see its shape.
Maya ruins in the jungle
Xunantunich, Caracol, Lamanai, and Altun Ha are uncrowded compared to Mexico's big sites. Caracol's main pyramid is still one of the tallest structures in Belize.
Caves you can swim through
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is a wade, swim, and scramble into a ceremonial cave with Maya pottery and skeletal remains. It is one of the most remarkable experiences in Central America.
English-speaking and easy
English is the official language, US dollars are widely accepted, and flights from the US are short. It is one of the easiest adventure trips in the region.
Things to do, and when to do them
Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley
The classic snorkel trip from Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker. Go early in the day for calmer water and fewer boats.
Great Blue Hole
A full-day dive trip from the cayes, best in the dry season when seas are calm. Nondivers can take a scenic flight instead.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave
A guided-only day trip from San Ignacio. Closed after heavy rain; the dry season is the safest time to go.
Xunantunich
Near San Ignacio, reached by a hand-cranked river ferry. Climb El Castillo for views into Guatemala.
Caracol
A long drive into the Chiquibul Forest to the largest Maya site in Belize. The road is rough, and the dry season is best.
Caye Caulker
A laid-back island with a Go Slow motto and the Split for swimming. Cheaper and quieter than Ambergris Caye.
Placencia and whale shark diving
A sandy peninsula in the south; from March through June, around the full moon, boats take divers and snorkelers to see whale sharks at Gladden Spit.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Whale shark season at Gladden Spit
Roughly March through June, around the full moon
Whale sharks gather to feed on snapper spawn. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the odds are best in April and May.
Lobsterfests
Late June through July, after lobster season opens on June 15
San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia each host a lobster festival with food stalls and music.
Belize Independence Day
September 21 every year
The climax of the September Celebrations, with parades and street parties across the country.
Garifuna Settlement Day
November 19 every year
A reenactment of the Garifuna arrival by boat at dawn in Dangriga and Hopkins, followed by drumming and dancing.
Beat the crowds
- Book the Blue Hole and ATM cave trips for weekdays; cruise ship days fill the popular tours from Belize City.
- Early December and May are the best value months, with dry weather and prices well below peak.
- Stay on Caye Caulker or in Placencia instead of San Pedro for a quieter island experience.
- In Cayo, arrive at Xunantunich and Caracol when they open; tour groups tend to come later in the morning.
Open or closed
- September and October: a number of resorts, restaurants, and dive shops close for part of the season. Confirm your lodge is open.
- The ATM cave closes after heavy rains for safety, which can happen at any time in the rainy season.
- Lobster is out of season from late winter until the season reopens on June 15, and conch has its own closed season. Expect them off menus in those months.
- Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking August through October. Storms can halt all boat trips for days.
With kids in tow
- Belize is a great first adventure trip for families: English is spoken, distances are short, and snorkeling in calm, shallow water inside the reef is perfect for kids.
- The ATM cave has minimum age limits set by tour operators and requires swimming; it suits older kids and teens.
- Cayo's jungle lodges offer river tubing, horseback riding, and butterfly farms that work well with younger children.
- For homeschool families, Belize combines reef ecology, rainforest biology, and Maya archaeology in a single trip.
Getting there
- Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE) near Belize City has nonstops from Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, and Charlotte, plus seasonal routes from other US cities.
- From Texas: Houston and Dallas nonstops run year-round and take about two hours.
- Short hops on local airlines or water taxis connect Belize City to Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Placencia. San Ignacio in Cayo is about two hours by road.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
