The straight answer
The best time to visit Guatemala is November through April, the dry season, with February and March offering the clearest volcano views and, when Easter falls there, Antigua's world-famous Semana Santa.
Go from November through April. That is the dry season across most of Guatemala, when the highlands around Antigua and Lake Atitlan have warm sunny days in the mid 70sF (24C), cool nights, and the clearest skies for volcano views and the overnight Acatenango hike. Tikal and the lowland Peten stay hot and humid year-round, but the dry season keeps the jungle trails firm and the mosquitoes lighter.
The rainy season runs roughly May through October. In the highlands, it usually means clear mornings and afternoon or evening downpours, not all-day rain, and the landscape turns brilliantly green. The downside is that clouds often hide the volcanoes by midday, some hikes get muddy or unsafe, and landslides can block mountain roads in September and October, the wettest months. The Caribbean coast around Livingston and Rio Dulce stays wet for much of the year.
Guatemala's calendar has two giant peaks. Semana Santa in Antigua, the week before Easter, brings some of the most elaborate processions in the Americas and fills every room in town; the Lenten Sundays before it offer a smaller version with fewer crowds. Late October into November 1 brings the giant kite festivals for All Saints' Day in Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepequez. Outside those peaks, Guatemala is one of the best-value trips in Central America.

Why go to Guatemala
Antigua, the colonial showpiece
Cobblestone streets, pastel facades, ruined churches from the 1773 earthquakes, and three volcanoes on the skyline. It is one of the most atmospheric colonial towns in the Americas.
Lake Atitlan
A deep blue caldera lake ringed by volcanoes and Maya villages, each with its own character, from bustling Panajachel to the weaving town of San Juan La Laguna.
Tikal
One of the great cities of the Maya world, with temple pyramids rising above the rainforest canopy, and howler monkeys and toucans in the trees around them.
Living Maya culture
More than 20 Maya languages are still spoken, and traditional dress, markets, and ceremonies are part of daily life in the highlands. The Chichicastenango market is the best-known example.
Volcanoes you can climb
Acatenango is an overnight hike with a view of Fuego erupting next door, one of the most memorable hikes in Central America. Pacaya is an easier half-day option.
Things to do, and when to do them
Antigua Guatemala
Walk the ruins of La Merced, San Francisco, and the cathedral, then climb Cerro de la Cruz for the classic view of Volcan de Agua.
Lake Atitlan
Hop between lake villages by public boat in the morning, when the water is calm; the afternoon wind, called the Xocomil, makes crossings rough.
Tikal National Park
Stay overnight nearby to enter early for sunrise and the cooler hours. Temple IV's top gives the famous view over the canopy.
Acatenango volcano overnight
A tough hike to a camp facing Fuego. Dry season from November through April gives the best odds of clear views.
Chichicastenango market
Held on Thursdays and Sundays, with textiles, masks, and a Maya-Catholic church on the steps of Santo Tomas. Go early.
Semuc Champey
Turquoise limestone pools in the Alta Verapaz jungle. The road is long and rough, and the pools can turn murky after heavy rain.
Rio Dulce and Livingston
A river gorge and a Garifuna town on the Caribbean coast, reached by boat. Different culture, food, and pace.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Semana Santa in Antigua
The week before Easter, March or April, with Lenten processions on the Sundays before
Massive processions carry floats over carpets of dyed sawdust and flowers. Among the most famous Holy Week celebrations in the Americas; book six months ahead.
Giant Kite Festival (Barriletes Gigantes)
November 1 every year
Enormous handmade kites fly over the cemeteries of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepequez for All Saints' Day.
Quema del Diablo
December 7 every year
The Burning of the Devil: bonfires and devil effigies burned in the streets at 6pm to cleanse the home before the Immaculate Conception feast.
Independence Day
September 15 every year
Torch relays run through the country the night before, followed by parades and school marching bands.
Beat the crowds
- Visit Antigua during a Lenten weekend in February or early March instead of Semana Santa itself: you see real processions with far fewer people.
- At Tikal, stay at a lodge inside or near the park so you can enter at opening and leave before the midday tour buses from Flores.
- Cross Lake Atitlan and hike in the mornings; the afternoon wind and clouds reduce visibility and comfort.
- November and early December are the best combination of dry weather, green landscapes, and moderate crowds.
Open or closed
- During Semana Santa, many businesses close for Thursday and Friday, and road closures in Antigua make getting around slow.
- Rainy season landslides, especially in September and October, can close mountain roads to Semuc Champey and the western highlands.
- Acatenango and Fuego volcano hikes can be suspended during periods of high volcanic activity; check with licensed guides.
- Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day close many shops and restaurants, while the preceding weeks are festive and busy.
With kids in tow
- Antigua is walkable and safe for families with normal precautions, and chocolate workshops and macadamia farms nearby are good with kids.
- Acatenango is too tough for most young children; Pacaya is an easier volcano hike for school-age kids.
- Tikal's size means a lot of walking in heat; go early and pace it for younger children.
- For homeschool families, Guatemala covers Maya history at Tikal, living Indigenous culture in the highlands, and immersion Spanish schools in Antigua and Xela.
Getting there
- La Aurora International (GUA) in Guatemala City has nonstops from Houston, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York, among others.
- Antigua is about an hour from the airport by shuttle or private car. Lake Atitlan is three to four hours by road.
- Tikal is best reached by a short domestic flight from Guatemala City to Flores, then about an hour by road.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
