The straight answer

The best time to visit Tahiti and French Polynesia is May through October, the cooler dry season, with May, June, September, and October the sweet spots for sunny weather, lower prices than July and August, and whale watching from about August on.

Go May through October. This is the austral winter and the dry season: steady trade winds, low humidity, highs near 82F (28C), and water still near 79F (26C). Southern hemisphere seasons are flipped, so this is the northern summer. July brings the Heiva i Tahiti, the islands' great dance and culture festival, and from roughly August to October or November, humpback whales arrive to calve around Moorea, Tahiti, and the Austral Islands.

The smartest picks are the edges of that window. May and June, and September and October, bring the same reliable weather with lower prices and fewer visitors than July and August, when French summer holidays and Heiva push demand to the top. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the other price peak.

November through April is the wet season: hotter, more humid, highs near 86F (30C), with heavy showers and the South Pacific cyclone season. Direct cyclone hits on the Society Islands, home to Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, are relatively uncommon, but the risk rises in El Nino years and the wettest months, typically December to February, can deliver days of rain. Rates drop and the lagoons remain warm, so it can be good value for flexible travelers.

Why go to Tahiti

Tahitian dance, drumming, outrigger canoe racing, tattoo traditions, and the Heiva festival make French Polynesia's culture a central part of any trip.

World-class diving

The Tuamotu atolls, especially Rangiroa and Fakarava, are famous for passes full of sharks, rays, and dolphins, with some of the best drift diving on Earth.

Island hopping across an ocean

French Polynesia's 118 islands and atolls span an area the size of Western Europe, from lush Society Islands to low coral atolls and the rugged Marquesas.

Southern hemisphere swells reach Tahiti's south coast, where Teahupo'o's famous wave was the surf venue of the 2024 Olympics.

Beat the crowds

  • Choose May, June, September, or October: dry-season weather, whales in the later months, and better rates than July and August.
  • Visit smaller islands like Taha'a, Huahine, or the Tuamotus for fewer visitors and more authentic island life.
  • Book overwater bungalows early for peak dates or look for multi-island packages and inter-island air passes, which can cut costs.
  • Explore Moorea on a weekday; Papeete residents head there on weekends.

Open or closed

  • Most businesses close on Sundays outside resorts, and many shops close at midday. Plan groceries and markets accordingly.
  • Inter-island flights by Air Tahiti can be affected by weather in the wet season; build buffer days before international departures.
  • During cyclone alerts, resorts and ferries may suspend activities; direct hits on the Society Islands are uncommon but possible.
  • Whale-watching activities are regulated, with seasonal permits and strict approach rules; book with licensed operators.

With kids in tow

  • Calm, shallow lagoons make French Polynesia very safe for snorkeling and swimming with kids.
  • Moorea offers more family-friendly lodging and activities than Bora Bora, with lower prices and ferry access from Tahiti.
  • Overwater bungalows are not always suitable for small children; check railing and age policies before booking.
  • For homeschool families, Polynesian navigation, volcanic island formation, and coral atolls make great lessons in history and geology.

Getting there

  • Faa'a International Airport (PPT) on Tahiti is the gateway, with nonstop flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco of roughly eight hours.
  • From Texas and the rest of the US, connect through Los Angeles or San Francisco.
  • Air Tahiti connects Papeete to Bora Bora, the Tuamotus, and other islands; ferries run between Tahiti and Moorea.
