What September is like in Tahiti

September is a top month. It is dry and sunny, with highs near 82F (28C), and humpback whale season is in full swing. After the European holidays, crowds thin out and prices ease a little from the peak. Lagoons are clear and calm, and it is still big-swell season at Teahupo'o.

This month suits almost everyone: honeymooners, whale watchers, families, and divers. If you only go once, this is a great pick. The only reason to choose another month is if you want the lowest prices, which come in the wetter months, or Heiva, which is in July.

Make the most of September

What is especially good about Tahiti this month.

01

Peak whale season

Humpbacks are around Tahiti and Moorea, and licensed operators run in-water encounters in some areas. It is a rare chance to see mothers and calves up close.

02

Moorea in its prime

Dry weather and whale sightings make Moorea, just a short ferry from Papeete, a great base.

03

Thinner crowds

With summer holidays over, lagoon tours and resorts feel much quieter than July and August.

What to pack for September

  • A rash guard and fins for whale swims
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Binoculars
  • A light layer for boat trips

Our timing tip

Book a morning whale trip early in your stay, so you have time to try again if the first outing comes up empty.

Beat the crowds

  • Choose May, June, September, or October: dry-season weather, whales in the later months, and better rates than July and August.
  • Visit smaller islands like Taha'a, Huahine, or the Tuamotus for fewer visitors and more authentic island life.
  • Book overwater bungalows early for peak dates or look for multi-island packages and inter-island air passes, which can cut costs.
  • Explore Moorea on a weekday; Papeete residents head there on weekends.

Know before you go

  • Most businesses close on Sundays outside resorts, and many shops close at midday. Plan groceries and markets accordingly.
  • Inter-island flights by Air Tahiti can be affected by weather in the wet season; build buffer days before international departures.
  • During cyclone alerts, resorts and ferries may suspend activities; direct hits on the Society Islands are uncommon but possible.
  • Whale-watching activities are regulated, with seasonal permits and strict approach rules; book with licensed operators.
