January through March is the sweet spot. The northeast monsoon, roughly December through April, is the Maldives' dry season: day after day of sun, glassy lagoons, highs near 86F (30C), and the best underwater visibility of the year. December delivers the same weather but wraps it in the Christmas to New Year price surge, when the famous resorts charge their highest rates of the calendar and book out months ahead.
The wet season, driven by the southwest monsoon from roughly May through October, is not the ruin the brochure comparison suggests. Rain arrives in dramatic bursts between sunny stretches, temperatures barely move, and resort prices drop by a third or more. The tradeoffs are real: choppier seas, breezier days, a higher chance of a washed-out afternoon, and plankton-rich water that trims visibility for snorkelers while, in a fine twist, drawing manta rays and whale sharks to feast.
The honest secret of the Maldives is that timing is mostly a money-and-luck dial on a place that is beautiful year round. A July trip can be flawless; a February trip can catch a squall. Pick the dry season if underwater clarity and guaranteed sun matter most, pick the shoulder and wet months if a hundred-dollars-a-night difference funds an extra excursion, and either way book the overwater villa before someone else does.

- If the budget is the constraint, book a guesthouse island in the dry season rather than a resort in the wet: same weather, different bill.
Open or closed
- Nothing seasonal ever closes: resorts run 365 days a year. What changes is access, as wet-season chop can cancel excursions, and seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late international arrivals may mean a night near Male before the transfer.
- During Ramadan (dates shift yearly), local-island cafes and shops close in daylight hours and alcohol-free norms apply as always; resort islands, which are exempt zones, operate normally.
- Alcohol is available only on resort islands and liveaboards, never on inhabited local islands or in Male, in any season.

- Overwater villas and toddlers are a nervous mix; beach villas with direct sand access make the trip relaxing instead of vigilant.
- The lagoon is the entertainment: snorkeling from shore, sandcastles on white sand, and glass-bottom kayaks fill days without a single screen. Budget for excursion costs, which add up fast at resorts.

Getting there
- All international flights land at Velana International (MLE) beside Male. There are no nonstops from the US: one-stop routings run through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, or Singapore, typically 20 to 26 hours door to door.
- From Texas, the Middle East routing is usually cleanest: Dallas or Houston to Doha or Dubai, then a 4 to 5 hour hop to Male. Plan for a full travel day each way.
