Winter Sun Escapes: Where It Is Actually Warm in January
Fourteen places where December to March means shorts, dry skies, and the sea still worth getting into.

The straight answer
The best winter sun escapes are the Canary Islands for a short hop from Europe, the Riviera Maya or Aruba from North America, and Oman or Thailand's Andaman coast for real heat, all reliably warm and dry from December to March.
Most winter sun lists are padded with places that are merely mild: 60F (16C) and breezy is not a beach holiday. This list sticks to destinations where daytime highs in January reliably reach the high 60s F (about 20C) or better, and where winter is the dry season rather than the rainy one.
The geography sorts itself into three bands. The Canaries and Madeira are the short-haul answer from Europe, pleasant rather than hot. The Gulf states, Egypt, and the Caribbean give real warmth at medium range. And South and Southeast Asia, plus Cape Town in its own summer, deliver full tropical heat if you are willing to fly for it.
The trade-off is price. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year almost everywhere on this list. January after the first week, and the stretch from late February into March outside spring break, are the best-value windows for the same weather.
01Canary Islands
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, Spain
Europe's most dependable winter warmth, with January highs near 70F (21C) on the southern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria and very little rain. February brings the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the biggest street carnivals in the world.
02Madeira
Funchal, Portugal
Milder than hot, with January highs near 66F (19C), but the levada trails, flower-filled Funchal, and one of the world's great New Year's Eve fireworks shows over the harbor make it the best winter pick for walkers rather than sunbathers.
03Dubai
United Arab Emirates
Summer highs above 105F (41C) make Dubai miserable from June to September, but January sits near 75F (24C) with almost no rain, which is when beach clubs, desert camps, and outdoor dining finally make sense. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs over the winter holidays.
04Oman
Muscat, Nizwa, and the Wahiba Sands
January highs near 77F (25C) in Muscat and cool desert nights make winter the only sensible season for wadi swimming at Wadi Shab, the Nizwa fort and Friday goat market, and a night camping in the Wahiba dunes. It feels far less built-up than its Gulf neighbors.
05Upper Egypt and the Red Sea
Luxor, Aswan, and Hurghada, Egypt
Luxor's temples and the Valley of the Kings are brutal in 105F (41C) summer heat, but in January highs sit near 73F (23C), perfect for a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Add a few days on the Red Sea, where the reefs stay diveable all winter.
06Goa
India's west coast
Once the monsoon clears, Goa settles into months of dry sunshine with highs near 90F (32C), and the beach shacks, Portuguese-era churches of Old Goa, and Latin Quarter in Panjim are all in full swing. Christmas and New Year are wildly busy; late January is calmer.
07Sri Lanka's south and west coast
Galle, Mirissa, and Bentota, Sri Lanka
The northeast monsoon soaks the east coast in winter and leaves the southwest dry, so December to March is the season for Galle Fort, the southern beaches, and blue whale trips from Mirissa. Add the tea country and the Cultural Triangle for a full loop.
08Thailand's Andaman coast
Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Phuket, Thailand
The Andaman side is at its calmest and clearest in the dry season, with highs near 90F (32C) and flat seas for island-hopping to Phi Phi and the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay. The Similan Islands marine park, the region's best diving, only opens in the dry season, roughly mid October to mid May.
09Maldives
Indian Ocean
The dry northeast monsoon brings the calmest seas, best underwater visibility, and most sunshine of the year, with highs near 86F (30C). It is also peak pricing, so the value window is the tail of the season in March and April.
10Riviera Maya
Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancun, Mexico
Winter is dry season on the Yucatan coast, with highs near 82F (28C) and much lower humidity than summer, and it usually comes before the heavy sargassum months of late spring and summer. Cenote swimming and the ruins at Tulum and Coba are far more comfortable now.
11Aruba
Southern Caribbean
Aruba is semi-arid, cooled by steady trade winds, and gets very little rain, so a January week here is about as close to guaranteed sun as the Caribbean offers. Eagle Beach regularly ranks among the best beaches in the region.
12Barbados
Eastern Caribbean
The dry season runs from December into spring, with highs near 84F (29C), calm west-coast water for swimming with turtles, and the Atlantic side's wild Bathsheba coast for contrast. Direct flights from London and the US East Coast make it an easy winter hop.
13Cape Town
Western Cape, South Africa
Your winter is Cape Town's summer: January highs near 79F (26C), long evenings, and dry weather for Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula drive, and the Winelands. Expect the strong southeaster wind, locally called the Cape Doctor, on many afternoons.
14Key West
Florida Keys
The warmest winter in the continental US, with January highs near 75F (24C) and the driest weather of the year. Sunset at Mallory Square, the Hemingway Home, and a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park are all at their best before the spring break crowds arrive.
Quick answers
Where is warm in January?
For guaranteed warmth, look to Oman, Dubai, Egypt, Goa, Sri Lanka's south coast, Thailand's Andaman coast, the Maldives, the Riviera Maya, Aruba, Barbados, Key West, and Cape Town, all with January highs of about 73F (23C) or higher and dry weather. The Canaries are the warmest option in Europe at around 70F (21C).
What is the closest winter sun to Europe?
The Canary Islands, about four hours from most of northern Europe, are the closest place with reliably warm, dry winters. Madeira is similar in distance but a few degrees cooler. For real heat, Egypt's Red Sea coast and the Gulf are around five to seven hours away.
What is the cheapest time for a winter sun trip?
The first three weeks of January, after the New Year rush and before February school holidays, are the best-value window across most of this list. Early December is also good. Christmas week, New Year, and US spring break in March carry the highest prices.
Is the Caribbean good in winter?
Yes. December to April is the Caribbean dry season, safely outside hurricane season, with highs in the low to mid 80s F (about 28 to 29C). It is also high season, so book early for Christmas and Presidents' Day week.
