The straight answer
The best time to visit Barbados is mid December through April, the dry season, with May the value pick and late July to early August the time for Crop Over; the wet season runs roughly June to November, and hurricane season peaks mid August to mid October.
Go between mid December and April. That is Barbados's dry season: highs in the mid 80sF (about 29C), steady trade winds, low humidity, and calm, clear water on the west and south coasts. It is also high season, when winter visitors from the US, Canada, and the UK fill the island, and Christmas through New Year is the priciest stretch of all.
Barbados has a geographical edge. It is the easternmost island in the Caribbean, out in the Atlantic, and it usually sits south and east of the paths of the strongest storms. Direct hurricane hits are uncommon, but not unknown: Hurricane Beryl passed close by in July 2024 and damaged boats and parts of the south coast, and Hurricane Elsa hit in July 2021. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 with the peak from mid August to mid October, which is also the wettest, most humid part of the year.
The shoulder season is a genuine option. May is typically still dry and sunny with much lower rates. Late July and early August bring Crop Over, one of the Caribbean's great festivals, which ends with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday of August. Sargassum can arrive on the east and south coasts in heavy years, usually spring through summer, while the sheltered west coast is usually much less affected.

Why go to Barbados
Two coasts, two personalities
The west (Platinum) coast offers calm, clear water and upscale resorts; the south coast has lively beaches and nightlife; the east coast has dramatic Atlantic surf at Bathsheba.
Rum country
Barbados is often called the birthplace of rum, with Mount Gay records going back to 1703 and estates such as St. Nicholas Abbey open to visitors.
Crop Over
The end-of-harvest festival has grown into a weeks-long celebration of calypso and soca, culminating in the Grand Kadooment parade.
A different kind of weather luck
As the easternmost Caribbean island, Barbados is usually outside the main hurricane track, though it is not immune.
Things to do, and when to do them
Harrison's Cave
A limestone cave system toured by tram, with streams, pools, and formations. A good option on a rainy day.
St. Nicholas Abbey
A 17th-century plantation house and working rum distillery in the north, with a heritage railway.
Mount Gay Visitor Centre
Rum tastings and history near Bridgetown, from one of the world's oldest rum brands.
Carlisle Bay
Calm water near Bridgetown with shipwrecks for snorkeling and swimming with turtles on boat tours.
Bathsheba and the east coast
Huge boulders and Atlantic waves, loved by surfers. Look, do not swim; the currents are dangerous.
Oistins Friday Fish Fry
Grilled fish, music, and dancing every Friday night on the south coast. Busy but friendly.
Andromeda Botanic Gardens
Tropical gardens on a hillside above the east coast.
Cricket at Kensington Oval
Watching a match here is a way into Bajan culture. Check the schedule for international fixtures.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Crop Over
Early summer, building through July to the first Monday of August
The island's biggest festival, run by the National Cultural Foundation. Grand Kadooment, the final parade, falls on the first Monday of August. Book accommodation months ahead.
Holetown Festival
February, around the anniversary of the 1627 English landing
A week of street fairs, music, and parades in Holetown, on the west coast.
Oistins Fish Festival
Easter weekend
A celebration of the fishing community in Oistins, with food, music, and boat races.
Independence Day
November 30 every year
Marks independence from Britain in 1966. Barbados became a republic on the same date in 2021.
Beat the crowds
- Go in May for dry-season weather at lower prices and with fewer visitors.
- Stay on the south coast instead of the west coast for lower prices and a livelier local scene, even in peak season.
- Visit Harrison's Cave and Carlisle Bay early, before cruise passengers arrive from Bridgetown.
- For Crop Over, book lodging and costume bands months ahead, or visit in early July for the fetes without the final crush.
Open or closed
- September and October: some hotels and restaurants close for a few weeks of annual maintenance, especially on the west coast.
- After Grand Kadooment in early August, the island enters its quietest period, and some businesses take their holidays.
- Public holidays, including Emancipation Day on August 1, Kadooment Day, and Independence Day on November 30, close government offices and many shops.
- East-coast beaches are for viewing, not swimming: strong currents make the Atlantic side dangerous year-round.
With kids in tow
- West- and south-coast beaches are calm and shallow, making them ideal for children. Carlisle Bay turtle snorkeling is a highlight for older kids.
- Harrison's Cave and the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, with free-roaming green monkeys, are easy family outings.
- Crop Over's Kiddies Kadooment offers a family-friendly version of the costume parade.
- For homeschool families: Barbados's history, from the English landing in 1627 through sugar and slavery to independence and becoming a republic in 2021, is a full course in Caribbean history.
Getting there
- Grantley Adams International (BGI) has nonstops from Miami, New York, Charlotte, Boston, and other hubs, often seasonally.
- The airport is on the south coast, about 20 to 45 minutes from most hotels.
- US citizens need a passport. Driving is on the left, and the local buses and minibuses are cheap and frequent.
