The straight answer

The best time to visit St. Lucia is mid December through April, the dry season, with May and early June the value window; the rainy season runs roughly June to November, overlapping hurricane season (June 1 to November 30, peak mid August to mid October).

Go between mid December and April. St. Lucia's dry season brings sunny days in the mid 80sF (about 29C), cooling trade winds, and the clearest views of the Pitons, the twin volcanic spires that are the island's signature. It is the right time for the Gros Piton climb and for rainforest hikes, when trails are at their driest. Christmas and New Year and the Easter period are the most expensive weeks.

The rainy season runs roughly June through November, with the heaviest rain usually from late summer into fall. Here the rain is often the bigger issue than the wind: St. Lucia sits near the southern edge of the main hurricane belt and direct hits are less frequent than farther north, but tropical storms and waves can dump heavy rain on the mountainous interior. Hurricane Tomas in 2010 caused deadly landslides, and roads between Castries and Soufriere can be cut after big storms. Hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, peaking mid August to mid October.

May and early June are the smart play: the dry season is mostly holding, the resorts drop their rates, and the island is noticeably quieter. July has St. Lucia Carnival, a big Caribbean-style carnival. The Atlantic east coast can see heavy sargassum in some years, typically spring through summer, but the resorts and beaches that most visitors use are on the sheltered west coast, which is usually much less affected.

Why go to St. Lucia

The Pitons

Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise straight from the sea near Soufriere, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Few Caribbean landscapes look anything like them.

Much of the interior is protected rainforest, and near Soufriere you can visit a volcanic area with sulphur vents and mud baths.

Resorts with a view

St. Lucia is known for honeymoon and romance resorts, many built into hillsides with views of the Pitons or Marigot Bay.

Creole culture

Kweyol language, Creole cooking, and the weekly street party in Gros Islet give the island a strong local identity.

Beat the crowds

  • Visit Sulphur Springs, Diamond Falls, and Tet Paul at opening time, before the cruise and day-trip groups arrive from the north.
  • Base in Soufriere, near the Pitons, instead of Rodney Bay if you want nature and quiet. The drive between the two takes over an hour on winding roads.
  • Travel in May and early June for dry-season weather at shoulder prices.
  • Check the Castries cruise schedule: popular sights and beaches are busier on ship days.

Open or closed

  • September and October: some smaller hotels and restaurants close for maintenance. The major resorts mostly stay open.
  • After heavy rain, the west coast road between Castries and Soufriere can be closed by landslides. Allow extra time in the rainy season.
  • The Gros Piton trail and rainforest trails can be muddy and slippery from June to November; guides may cancel after heavy rain.
  • Public holidays such as Independence Day, Emancipation Day (August 1), and Carnival Monday and Tuesday close government offices and some shops.

With kids in tow

  • St. Lucia leans toward couples and honeymooners, but several large resorts in the north cater to families.
  • The winding roads can make kids carsick. Consider staying near the sights you want to visit, or taking water taxis along the west coast.
  • Tet Paul, Diamond Falls, and the Pigeon Island ruins work well for school-age children.
  • For homeschool families: volcanic geology around Soufriere and the island's mixed French and British colonial history make good study topics.

Getting there

  • Hewanorra International (UVF) in the south handles most flights from the US, with nonstops from hubs such as Miami, New York, Atlanta, and Charlotte.
  • From UVF it is about an hour to Soufriere and around 90 minutes to Rodney Bay on winding roads; many resorts arrange transfers or helicopter shuttles.
  • George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU), near Castries, mainly handles regional flights. US citizens need a passport, and driving is on the left.

September and October are cheapest because of the rainy season and hurricane risk. For low prices with better weather, try May and early June.

When is the rainy season in St. Lucia?

Roughly June through November, with the heaviest rain usually from late summer into fall. Rain often falls in short, heavy bursts, but tropical storms can bring longer downpours and landslides.

The Atlantic east coast can get heavy sargassum in some years, typically spring through summer. The west coast, where most resorts and beaches are, is usually much less affected.
