The straight answer
The best time to visit Jamaica is mid December through mid April, the dry season, with late April and early May the value window; hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks mid August to mid October, and October is usually the wettest month.
Go between mid December and mid April. That is Jamaica's dry season, when Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios sit in the mid 80sF (about 29C) with low humidity and mostly blue skies, and the Blue Mountains are clear enough for the sunrise hike. It is also peak season, so Christmas week, New Year, and the March spring-break weeks carry the year's highest rates, especially in Negril.
Jamaica has two rainy periods, not one: a first round roughly in May and June, and a heavier one from September through November, with October typically the wettest month. Layered on top is hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid August to mid October. Jamaica is in the main storm belt. Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record, struck southwestern Jamaica in late October 2025, and recovery in the hardest-hit western parishes has taken time. Check the current status of any specific hotel or attraction before booking.
The shoulder months are where Jamaica gets interesting. Late April and May bring falling prices and mostly dry days. July is hot but lively, built around Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay and summer on the north coast. Sargassum seaweed can reach some beaches in heavy years, typically spring through summer; west-facing Negril tends to fare better than exposed south- and east-facing shores.

Why go to Jamaica
Culture you can feel
Reggae, dancehall, jerk, patois, the Maroon heritage of the Cockpit Country: Jamaica has an identity strong enough that even resort guests come home talking about it.
Mountains, not just beaches
The Blue Mountains rise over 7,000 feet behind Kingston, with coffee estates, cool air, and a pre-dawn hike to watch sunrise over both coasts.
Waterfalls and rivers
Dunn's River Falls, YS Falls, and bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae and Rio Grande make Jamaica one of the Caribbean's best islands for freshwater adventures.
Every style of stay
Couples-only all-inclusives in Negril and Ocho Rios, big family resorts in Montego Bay, and small guesthouses in Treasure Beach and Port Antonio.
Things to do, and when to do them
Dunn's River Falls
Climb the terraced falls hand in hand with a guide. Go at opening or on a day with no cruise ship in Ocho Rios; water shoes are a must.
Bob Marley Museum, Kingston
Marley's former home and studio on Hope Road. Tours are guided and run on a schedule; pair it with Devon House ice cream.
Blue Mountain Peak sunrise hike
A long overnight hike to the island's highest point for dawn views. Dry-season months give the clearest summit.
Negril's Seven Mile Beach and cliffs
Long, west-facing sand for sunsets, and the West End cliffs for cliff jumping and Rick's Cafe crowds at golden hour.
Rose Hall Great House
An 18th-century plantation great house outside Montego Bay, with daytime history tours and evening ghost tours.
Appleton Estate
The rum estate in the Nassau Valley, on a route that pairs well with YS Falls and the Black River.
Port Antonio and the Blue Lagoon
The lush, rainy northeast: rafting on the Rio Grande, Frenchman's Cove, and a slower Jamaica far from the resort strips.
Treasure Beach
A quiet south-coast fishing community with guesthouses and a community-tourism feel. The antidote to all-inclusive life.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Reggae Sumfest
Mid to late July
Jamaica's biggest music festival, in Montego Bay, with all-night shows. Montego Bay hotels book up; plan months ahead.
Accompong Maroon Festival
January 6 every year
The Maroons of Accompong mark their 1739 treaty with the British with drumming, ceremony, and a huge gathering in the Cockpit Country.
Bob Marley's birthday
February 6 every year
Tribute concerts and events at the Bob Marley Museum and around Kingston.
Jamaica Carnival
Around Easter, typically April
Soca fetes and road marches in Kingston and Ocho Rios in the weeks around Easter.
Emancipation and Independence
August 1 and August 6 every year
Emancipation Day and Independence Day bookend a week of national celebration, with Grand Gala events in Kingston.
Beat the crowds
- Aim for late April through mid May: dry-season weather mostly holds while spring-break crowds and rates are gone.
- Check the Ocho Rios and Montego Bay cruise schedules before visiting Dunn's River Falls; on ship days the falls turn into a human chain by mid morning.
- In March, base in Treasure Beach, Port Antonio, or a quieter corner of Negril's West End instead of Seven Mile Beach's party stretch.
- Book Blue Mountain hikes and Kingston nights midweek, when the island's own weekend crowds are back at work.
Open or closed
- After Hurricane Melissa in late October 2025, some hotels and attractions in the western parishes closed for repairs. Reopening dates vary; confirm directly with any specific property before booking.
- September and October: some smaller hotels and restaurants close for maintenance or staff vacation, especially in Negril and Treasure Beach.
- Blue Mountain trails and mountain roads can close or become impassable after heavy rain; October and November are the riskiest months.
- Public holidays such as Emancipation Day, Independence Day, Good Friday, and Christmas close government offices and many shops; resorts and tourist areas carry on.
With kids in tow
- Montego Bay and Ocho Rios have the widest choice of family-friendly all-inclusives; many Negril resorts are adults-only.
- Dunn's River Falls, river rafting, and glass-bottom boats work for school-age kids. Water shoes and a guide make the falls climb much easier.
- Driving distances are longer than the map suggests on winding roads; limit day trips with small kids to one big outing every other day.
- For homeschool families: the Maroon history of Accompong, Kingston's music heritage, and Rose Hall's plantation history form a serious look at Caribbean history.
Getting there
- Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay is the main tourist gateway, with nonstops from most major US hubs including Dallas and Houston. Norman Manley International (KIN) serves Kingston.
- Plan on about 90 minutes by road from MBJ to Negril or Ocho Rios; the north coast highway has shortened the trip east.
- US citizens need a passport. Many resorts include airport transfers; renting a car means driving on the left.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
Jamaica timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Jamaica?
February. It is the heart of the dry season, between the holiday crowds and spring break. January and early March are close behind; late April is the best value.
What is the cheapest time to visit Jamaica?
September and October are cheapest because they are peak hurricane and rainy season. For low prices with better weather odds, try May, June, or the first half of December.
When is the rainy season in Jamaica?
Jamaica has two: a lighter one around May and June, and a heavier one from September through November, with October usually the wettest month. Even then, many days have sun between downpours.
When is hurricane season in Jamaica?
June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid August to mid October. Jamaica is in the main hurricane belt; Hurricane Melissa hit in late October 2025 and Hurricane Beryl brushed the south coast in July 2024. Buy travel insurance for summer and fall trips.
Is Jamaica crowded in March?
Yes, around resort areas. Spring break fills Negril and Montego Bay. The weather is excellent, so if March is your window, choose a quieter base like Treasure Beach or Port Antonio.
Does Jamaica have sargassum?
In heavy seaweed years, some beaches do, typically from spring through summer. West-facing Negril tends to be less affected than exposed south- and east-facing shores. Resorts usually clear their beaches daily.
