The straight answer
The best time to visit Punta Cana is December through April, the dry season, with late November and early December the value sweet spot; hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking mid August to mid October, and sargassum seaweed is most likely from spring through late summer.
Go between December and April. That is Punta Cana's dry season, with highs in the low to mid 80sF (about 28C), lower humidity, and a steady breeze along the Bavaro and Punta Cana beaches. It is also humpback whale season in Samana Bay, a long day trip away. The catch is price: Christmas through New Year, Presidents' Day week, and the March spring-break weeks are the most expensive and most crowded, and Semana Santa brings Dominican families to the beaches around Easter.
Two warnings apply here more than almost anywhere. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking mid August to mid October, and the eastern Dominican Republic is exposed: Hurricane Fiona made landfall near Punta Cana in September 2022. Second, sargassum: in heavy years, the east-facing beaches of Bavaro and Punta Cana are among the Caribbean shores most affected by drifting seaweed, typically from spring through late summer. Resorts rake beaches daily and some install barriers, but in bad weeks the water near shore can be brown. It varies greatly by year and by week.
The value windows are late November through mid December, when the dry season is starting and seaweed is usually minimal, and the stretch between mid January and mid February, after the holidays. Summer is much cheaper and often fine, but go with flexible expectations about the beach and plan boat trips to Saona Island, where conditions can be better.

Why go to Punta Cana
Easy all-inclusive beach trips
Punta Cana has one of the largest concentrations of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, with nonstop flights from many US cities and short transfers.
Long beaches
Bavaro, Macao, and Juanillo offer miles of palm-lined sand, with Macao known for surf and a more local feel.
Island and nature day trips
Saona Island in the Cotubanama (East) National Park, the cenote-like Hoyo Azul, and mangroves and caves at Los Haitises in the north.
Whales and history within reach
Humpback whales gather in Samana Bay each winter, and Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a long day trip.
Things to do, and when to do them
Saona Island
Catamaran or speedboat trips from Bayahibe to palm beaches and the shallow natural pool with starfish. Choose a small-group operator to avoid the crowds.
Hoyo Azul at Scape Park
A blue freshwater sinkhole at the base of a cliff, part of the Scape Park adventure park in Cap Cana. Go early for the clearest light and fewer people.
Macao Beach
A wide, less-developed beach north of Bavaro with surf schools and local seafood shacks.
Whale watching in Samana Bay
From mid January to around the end of March, boats see humpbacks in the bay. It is a long day trip from Punta Cana by road or a short flight.
Altos de Chavon
A replica Mediterranean village above the Chavon River near La Romana, with views, an amphitheater, and art shops.
Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone
The oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas, with the first cathedral and cobbled streets. About two and a half to three hours by road.
Los Haitises National Park
Mangroves, karst islands, and caves with Taino rock art. Usually visited by boat from Samana or Sabana de la Mar.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Dominican Carnival
Sundays in February, peaking around February 27
Masked devils (diablos cojuelos) and parades in towns across the country, especially La Vega and Santo Domingo. Punta Cana resorts are far from the main events.
Humpback whale season in Samana Bay
Mid January to around the end of March
Thousands of humpbacks come to the waters around the Dominican Republic to mate and calve. Samana Bay is the easiest place to see them.
Independence Day
February 27 every year
The national holiday and the climax of the Carnival season, with parades in Santo Domingo.
Semana Santa
Holy Week, March or April
Dominicans head to the beaches and rivers. Resorts and public beaches are packed, and alcohol sales are restricted on some days.
Beat the crowds
- Aim for mid January to mid February, or late November to mid December, for dry-season weather without holiday pricing.
- Book Saona Island trips with smaller operators or early departures; the big tour boats arrive mid morning and fill the natural pool.
- If sargassum is heavy, check south-coast Bayahibe or book Saona Island days; the south coast often, though not always, fares better.
- Avoid Semana Santa if you want calm public beaches; locals fill the coast that week.
Open or closed
- Most resorts stay open year-round, but some close for renovations in September and October. Check before booking.
- Saona Island and Samana boat trips can be canceled in rough seas or storms, especially in the fall.
- During Semana Santa, and on election days, alcohol sales can be restricted outside resorts.
- Sargassum conditions change weekly. Resorts can rake the beach but cannot control the water, so check recent guest photos before booking in summer.
With kids in tow
- Many large resorts have kids' clubs, water parks, and family suites, making Punta Cana one of the easiest family beach trips.
- Choose resorts on calm stretches of Bavaro and Cap Cana for the gentlest water; Macao has bigger surf.
- Scape Park and Saona Island are good family day trips; bring sun protection for long boat days.
- For homeschool families: a day in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone brings to life the first European settlement in the Americas.
Getting there
- Punta Cana International (PUJ) has nonstops from many US cities, including Dallas and Houston, and is about 15 to 45 minutes from most resorts.
- US citizens need a passport. The Dominican Republic uses an electronic entry and exit form (e-Ticket) that you complete online before travel.
- Driving across the country is possible, but road safety is a concern. Most visitors use transfers or organized tours.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.

February. It is the heart of the dry season, sargassum is usually minimal, and whales are in Samana Bay. January and March are close behind, but March is spring-break busy.

September and October, because of hurricane season. For good weather at lower prices, try late November to mid December, or May.
When is sargassum season in Punta Cana?
