What October is like in Punta Cana

October is hot, with highs near 87F (31C) and rainy spells. Early October is still inside the peak hurricane window, but the risk eases as the month goes on. Prices are very low and beaches are quiet. Some resorts may be closed for renovations, and boat trips to Saona or Samana can be canceled in rough seas.

October suits flexible bargain hunters who can live with some rain and uncertainty. The second half of the month is a better bet than the first. For more settled weather at still-low prices, wait until mid to late November.

Make the most of October

What is especially good about Punta Cana this month.

01

Very low resort rates

Prices stay near their yearly bottom, with room upgrades easy to find.

02

Quiet beaches

Crowds are light, so there is space on the sand and at the pool bar.

03

Day trip to Santo Domingo

The Colonial Zone, with the first cathedral in the Americas and cobbled streets, is a good plan for a cloudy day. It is about two and a half to three hours by road.

What to pack for October

  • A light rain jacket
  • Quick-dry clothing
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Colonial Zone
  • Reef-safe sunscreen

Our timing tip

Check that your resort is open and not mid-renovation before booking, and aim for the second half of October.

Beat the crowds

  • Aim for mid January to mid February, or late November to mid December, for dry-season weather without holiday pricing.
  • Book Saona Island trips with smaller operators or early departures; the big tour boats arrive mid morning and fill the natural pool.
  • If sargassum is heavy, check south-coast Bayahibe or book Saona Island days; the south coast often, though not always, fares better.
  • Avoid Semana Santa if you want calm public beaches; locals fill the coast that week.

Know before you go

  • Most resorts stay open year-round, but some close for renovations in September and October. Check before booking.
  • Saona Island and Samana boat trips can be canceled in rough seas or storms, especially in the fall.
  • During Semana Santa, and on election days, alcohol sales can be restricted outside resorts.
  • Sargassum conditions change weekly. Resorts can rake the beach but cannot control the water, so check recent guest photos before booking in summer.
