The straight answer
The best time to visit Turks and Caicos is mid April through May, when the weather is dry, the water is warming, and peak winter rates start to fall; December through March is the priciest season, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking mid August to mid October.
Go from mid April through May. Providenciales stays sunny and dry, highs reach the mid 80sF (about 29C), the water warms toward 80F (27C), and the post-Easter drop in rates is real at Grace Bay's resorts. That window combines the best weather of the high season with shoulder-season prices and noticeably thinner beaches.
Winter, from mid December through March, is peak season, and Turks and Caicos is not a cheap destination even in the off-season. Christmas week and the March spring-break weeks are the priciest of all. Winter weather is warm and dry, though northern cold fronts can occasionally bring a breezy, cooler day, and it is also humpback whale season, when whales pass Salt Cay and Grand Turk on their way to and from their breeding grounds to the south.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the peak from mid August to mid October. The islands are in the storm path: Hurricanes Irma and Maria both hit in September 2017. On top of the weather risk, many restaurants and some resorts close for several weeks in September and into October for maintenance and staff vacations, so the island can feel half shut. Summer from June to early August, by contrast, brings calm, clear water and fair prices. Sargassum can reach some beaches in heavy years, though Grace Bay's reef offers some protection.

Why go to Turks and Caicos
Grace Bay
A long crescent of soft white sand and calm, clear water on Providenciales, protected by an offshore reef. It is the reason most people come.
Walls and reefs
Some of the Caribbean's best wall diving, especially off Grand Turk, and a barrier reef that runs along the north shore of the Caicos islands.
Easy from the US
Providenciales has nonstops from many US cities, many of them under four hours, and the US dollar is the official currency.
Quieter islands nearby
North and Middle Caicos, Salt Cay, and Grand Turk offer caves, whale watching, and a much slower pace than Provo.
Things to do, and when to do them
Grace Bay Beach
Walk it end to end in the morning, before the beach loungers fill. The calmest water is usually on the eastern end.
Snorkeling at Smith's Reef and Bight Reef
Reefs you can swim to from shore on Provo, with turtles and rays. Best on calm days, which are most common in summer.
Chalk Sound
A shallow lagoon of surreal turquoise dotted with small islets, best seen by kayak or paddleboard in the morning.
Iguana Island (Little Water Cay)
A protected cay with endemic rock iguanas, reached by boat. Stay on the boardwalks.
Middle Caicos and Conch Bar Caves
Take the ferry to North Caicos and drive the causeway to empty Mudjin Harbor and the island's large cave system. A full day.
Grand Turk and Salt Cay
The historic capital, salt pond heritage, wall dives right offshore, and whale watching from roughly January through April.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Humpback whale season
Roughly January through April
North Atlantic humpbacks pass through the Turks Island Passage near Grand Turk and Salt Cay. Book with a licensed local operator; sightings are never guaranteed.
Maskanoo
Boxing Day, December 26
A street festival of music, masks, and costumed dancers in Grace Bay, the islands' take on Junkanoo-style celebrations.
Emancipation Day
August 1 every year
A public holiday marking the end of slavery in the British Caribbean, with local celebrations.
Beat the crowds
- Target late April through May: winter weather without winter rates or crowds.
- If you add a Grand Turk day trip, pick a day with no cruise ships in port; on ship days the island's beaches and Cockburn Town fill up.
- Get to Chalk Sound and the snorkel reefs early, when the water is calmest and the tour boats have not yet arrived.
- Stay on North or Middle Caicos for a night or two to see a version of the islands that has almost no crowds at any time of year.
Open or closed
- September and into October: many restaurants and some resorts close for maintenance and vacations. Confirm your hotel's dining options before booking a fall trip.
- Boat trips and ferries to North Caicos depend on the sea; winter fronts and summer storms can cancel them for a day.
- Grand Turk's cruise center dominates the island on ship days; on other days its beaches and historic Cockburn Town are very quiet.
With kids in tow
- Grace Bay's calm, shallow water is ideal for kids, and several large Provo resorts cater to families.
- Eating out is expensive. Many families choose condo-style resorts with kitchens and stock up at Provo's supermarkets.
- Iguana Island, snorkeling from shore at Bight Reef, and glass-bottom boat trips are easy wins for younger children.
- For homeschool families: the salt industry history of Grand Turk and Salt Cay, and whale migration in winter, make great projects.
Getting there
- Providenciales International (PLS) has nonstops from many US hubs, including Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, and New York, with seasonal flights from Dallas and Houston.
- Grand Turk is reached by short inter-island flights; North and Middle Caicos by ferry from Provo.
- US citizens need a passport. The US dollar is the official currency, and driving is on the left.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
