The straight answer
The best time to visit the Bahamas is mid April through May, when the water has warmed, the dry season is holding, and spring-break crowds are gone; December through March is peak season but brings cool fronts, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking mid August to mid October.
Go from mid April through May. By then the sea has warmed back toward 80F (27C), rain is still scarce, and the spring-break wave has cleared out of Nassau and Paradise Island. It is the window when the Exumas' famous shades of blue look exactly like the photographs and the price has not caught up to the conditions.
Here is what surprises people: the Bahamas sit north of the true tropics' heat, and winter is noticeably cooler than in the southern Caribbean. From December through March, Nassau's highs sit in the upper 70sF (about 25C), the water drops to around 74F (23C), and cold fronts from the mainland can bring a few windy, gray days at a time. It is still lovely, and it is peak season, but if swimming is the point, spring beats winter.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the peak from mid August to mid October, and the Bahamas are squarely in the storm track: Hurricane Dorian devastated the Abacos and Grand Bahama in early September 2019. Most summer weeks pass without trouble, and summer brings the warmest water of the year, but late-summer and fall trips should be refundable and insured. Sargassum is generally less of a problem here than in the eastern Caribbean, though Atlantic-facing beaches can collect it in heavy years.

Why go to The Bahamas
The water
The Exuma Cays and the shallow banks around them produce some of the clearest, most vividly colored water on Earth, visible even from the airplane window.
Close to home
Nassau is about an hour from Miami by air, and many islands are within easy reach of Florida by small plane or boat. A long weekend is realistic.
Two trips in one country
Nassau and Paradise Island offer big resorts, casinos, and nightlife; the Out Islands, such as Eleuthera, the Exumas, and Andros, offer quiet cays and empty beaches.
Marine life
Blue holes on Andros, the protected Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, sharks, rays, and turtles in the shallows: the Bahamas are a snorkeler's country.
Things to do, and when to do them
Exuma Cays by boat
A day through the cays: Thunderball Grotto, the swimming pigs of Big Major Cay, iguanas on the cays, and sandbars at low tide. Calm-sea days in spring and early summer are the best.
Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
A no-take marine reserve run by the Bahamas National Trust, reached by boat. Some of the healthiest reefs in the country.
Harbour Island's pink sand
Three miles of pink-tinged sand on the Atlantic side of Eleuthera, reached by a short water taxi from North Eleuthera airport.
Atlantis, Paradise Island
The mega-resort's water park, aquariums, and marine habitat. Day passes are available but limited; check before planning a visit.
Nassau on foot
Queen's Staircase, Fort Fincastle, and Arawak Cay's fish fry stalls for conch salad. Cruise-ship days make downtown crowded.
Andros blue holes
The largest Bahamian island is mostly wild, with inland and ocean blue holes, a huge barrier reef, and world-class bonefishing.
Eleuthera road trip
One long, skinny island of empty beaches, the Glass Window Bridge, and small settlements. Quietest in late spring.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Junkanoo
Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year's Day every year
Pre-dawn parades of costumed groups, cowbells, and goatskin drums rush down Bay Street in Nassau. The country's defining cultural event; bleacher seats sell ahead.
National Family Island Regatta
Late April
Traditional Bahamian wooden sloops race in Elizabeth Harbour, George Town, Exuma. The Exumas' biggest week; rooms book up.
Independence Day
July 10 every year
The Bahamas mark independence from Britain in 1973 with celebrations and fireworks, especially in Nassau.
Emancipation Day
The first Monday of August
A public-holiday long weekend of homecomings and parties. Nassau's Fox Hill community keeps its own traditional celebration, Fox Hill Day, the following week.
Beat the crowds
- Skip Nassau and Paradise Island in March if you are not there for spring break; go to Eleuthera, the Exumas, or Andros instead.
- Check the Nassau cruise schedule: downtown and Paradise Island beaches are packed on multi-ship days and noticeably quieter on light days.
- Book Exuma boat tours for the first departure of the day; the pig beach and grotto get crowded as the day tours stack up.
- Target the two value windows: late April to May, and early November to mid December outside Thanksgiving week.
Open or closed
- September and early October: some Out Island resorts, restaurants, and dive shops close for several weeks. Nassau's big resorts stay open year-round.
- Winter cold fronts can cancel boat tours and ferries for a day or two; build slack into an Exumas itinerary between December and March.
- The Abacos and parts of Grand Bahama were heavily damaged by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Much has been rebuilt, but some properties never reopened; confirm current status before booking.
- Junkanoo nights (Boxing Day and New Year's Day) close roads in downtown Nassau and shift business hours around the parades.
With kids in tow
- Nassau and Paradise Island have the easiest big-resort family setups; Atlantis is built for kids, with a matching price tag.
- Winter water near 74F (23C) feels chilly to many kids. For family beach trips, April, May, and early summer are warmer and calmer.
- Out Island travel often involves small planes and boats; keep luggage light and plan for weather delays.
- For homeschool families: Bahamian history, from Lucayan peoples to Loyalist settlers, pairs with marine biology lessons in the national parks.
Getting there
- Lynden Pindling International (NAS) in Nassau has nonstops from many US cities, including Dallas and Houston, and runs US Customs preclearance for the flight home.
- The Out Islands have their own airports, including George Town, Exuma (GGT), and North Eleuthera (ELH), with direct flights from Florida and some other US cities, plus connections through Nassau.
- US citizens need a passport. Driving is on the left, and inter-island ferries run from Nassau to several islands.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.

The Bahamas timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit the Bahamas?
May. The water has warmed, the dry season is holding, spring break is over, and rates are dropping. The second half of April is a close second.
What is the cheapest time to visit the Bahamas?
September and October are cheapest, because they are the peak of hurricane season. For better odds with lower prices, target November and early December, or late May and June.
Is it warm in the Bahamas in winter?
Mild, not hot. Nassau's highs sit in the upper 70sF (about 25C) from December through March, water is around 74F (23C), and cold fronts can bring windy, cooler days. It is pleasant, but swimmers may find it brisk.
When is hurricane season in the Bahamas?
June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid August to mid October. The Bahamas are in the main storm path; Hurricane Dorian in 2019 is the recent reminder. Buy insurance and book refundable rates for late summer and fall.
When is the Bahamas crowded?
Christmas through New Year and the March spring-break weeks are the busiest, especially in Nassau and Paradise Island. Cruise-ship days also crowd Nassau year-round.
