What January is like in Jamaica

January is prime dry season in Jamaica. Coastal highs sit near 85F (29C), skies are mostly sunny, and the humidity is lower than in summer. After the New Year rush fades, beaches in Negril and Montego Bay feel a little calmer, though prices stay high. Mornings in the Blue Mountains are cool and clear, which makes it a great month for the sunrise summit hike.

This month suits families, couples, and anyone who wants reliable beach weather. On January 6, the Accompong Maroon Festival draws a big crowd to the Cockpit Country. If you want lower prices, early December or May are cheaper.

Beat the crowds

  • Aim for late April through mid May: dry-season weather mostly holds while spring-break crowds and rates are gone.
  • Check the Ocho Rios and Montego Bay cruise schedules before visiting Dunn's River Falls; on ship days the falls turn into a human chain by mid morning.
  • In March, base in Treasure Beach, Port Antonio, or a quieter corner of Negril's West End instead of Seven Mile Beach's party stretch.
  • Book Blue Mountain hikes and Kingston nights midweek, when the island's own weekend crowds are back at work.

Know before you go

  • After Hurricane Melissa in late October 2025, some hotels and attractions in the western parishes closed for repairs. Reopening dates vary; confirm directly with any specific property before booking.
  • September and October: some smaller hotels and restaurants close for maintenance or staff vacation, especially in Negril and Treasure Beach.
  • Blue Mountain trails and mountain roads can close or become impassable after heavy rain; October and November are the riskiest months.
  • Public holidays such as Emancipation Day, Independence Day, Good Friday, and Christmas close government offices and many shops; resorts and tourist areas carry on.
