What January is like in Barbados

January is peak dry season. Days are sunny and breezy with highs near 84F (29C), humidity is low, and the water on the west and south coasts is calm and clear. The island is full of winter visitors from the US, Canada and the UK, so hotels are busy and prices are near their highest once New Year has passed.

January suits families, couples and anyone who wants guaranteed sun and easy swimming. It is hard to beat for weather. If price matters more than a perfect forecast, May gives you mostly dry days for far less.

Make the most of January

What is especially good about Barbados this month.

01

Calm west-coast water

The sheltered beaches of the west coast are glassy and clear, which is ideal for small children and snorkeling.

02

Turtles in Carlisle Bay

Boat trips from Bridgetown let you swim with turtles and snorkel over shipwrecks in calm, clear water.

03

Oistins Friday Fish Fry

Cool, breezy evenings make the south coast's Friday night grilled fish and music especially good.

What to pack for January

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard
  • Snorkel gear if you have a good-fitting mask
  • A light layer for breezy evenings
  • Water shoes for rocky entries

Beat the crowds

  • Go in May for dry-season weather at lower prices and with fewer visitors.
  • Stay on the south coast instead of the west coast for lower prices and a livelier local scene, even in peak season.
  • Visit Harrison's Cave and Carlisle Bay early, before cruise passengers arrive from Bridgetown.
  • For Crop Over, book lodging and costume bands months ahead, or visit in early July for the fetes without the final crush.

Know before you go

  • September and October: some hotels and restaurants close for a few weeks of annual maintenance, especially on the west coast.
  • After Grand Kadooment in early August, the island enters its quietest period, and some businesses take their holidays.
  • Public holidays, including Emancipation Day on August 1, Kadooment Day, and Independence Day on November 30, close government offices and many shops.
  • East-coast beaches are for viewing, not swimming: strong currents make the Atlantic side dangerous year-round.
