The straight answer
The best time to visit Sri Lanka is December through March for the south and west coasts, the hill country, and the Cultural Triangle; for the east coast, go May through September.
For most first trips, go from December through March. That is dry season on the south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota), in the hill country around Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya, and in the Cultural Triangle of Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa. It is also blue whale season off Mirissa.
The key to Sri Lanka is that it has two monsoons hitting different coasts. The southwest monsoon (Yala) runs roughly May to September and soaks the west and south coasts and the western slopes of the hill country, while the east coast around Trincomalee, Pasikudah, and Arugam Bay is dry and at its best. The northeast monsoon (Maha) runs roughly December to February and brings rain to the north and east, while the south and west are dry.
Between them come two inter-monsoon periods, roughly March to April and October to November, with afternoon thunderstorms that can hit anywhere. October and November are the wettest months for much of the island, and late in the year cyclones can form in the Bay of Bengal; Cyclone Ditwah caused deadly floods and landslides across the island in late November 2025. That is the one window to avoid if you can.

Why go to Sri Lanka
An island packed into a small space
Colonial Galle, misty tea estates, ancient cities, leopard safaris, and surf beaches are all within a few hours of each other.
Ancient cities and sacred sites
Sigiriya's rock fortress, the cave temples of Dambulla, the ruins of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.
Wildlife beyond the Big Five
Leopards at Yala and Wilpattu, hundreds of elephants gathering at Minneriya, and blue whales off Mirissa and Trincomalee.
The train through tea country
The line from Kandy to Ella climbs through tea plantations and cloud forest. Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025 badly damaged the hill country line, and sections have been reopening in stages through 2026, so check which stretches are running before you plan around it.
Things to do, and when to do them
Sigiriya
Climb at opening, around 7am, before the heat and the tour groups. The climb takes about one to two hours up and down.
Temple of the Tooth, Kandy
Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist site. Visit during the morning or evening puja ceremony and dress in white or modest clothing.
Kandy to Ella train
Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in late November 2025 and it has reopened in stages, with the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch back first. Check current Sri Lanka Railways service before booking; when it runs, reserve seats well in advance.
Galle Fort
A walled Dutch colonial town. Walk the ramparts at sunset. Best from December to April.
Yala National Park
Leopards and elephants, best in the dry months. The park often closes for part of September and October; check dates before you book.
Whale watching at Mirissa
Blue whale season is roughly December to April. Choose operators that follow the viewing guidelines.
East coast beaches
Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, and Arugam Bay are the summer escape when the southwest monsoon hits the other side.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
A night climb to watch sunrise from the summit, best in pilgrimage season from about December to May.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Adam's Peak pilgrimage season
Roughly December to May, from the Unduvap to the Vesak full moon
Paths are lit and tea stalls are open for night climbs. Weekends and full moon days are very crowded.
Sinhala and Tamil New Year
Mid April, usually April 13 and 14
The biggest family holiday of the year. Many shops and businesses close for several days and transport is packed.
Vesak
The full moon of May, set by the lunar calendar
Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death are celebrated with lanterns and illuminated pandals. Alcohol sales stop and many businesses close.
Kandy Esala Perahera
Late July or August, set by the lunar calendar
Ten nights of processions with dancers, drummers, and decorated elephants. Kandy hotels sell out and prices soar.
Minneriya elephant gathering
Roughly July to September, varies by year
Hundreds of elephants gather around the shrinking Minneriya reservoir in the dry season.
Beat the crowds
- Follow the monsoons, not the calendar. In July and August, when Europe's summer holidays fill Galle and Ella, spend more of your time on the dry east coast.
- Climb Sigiriya at opening or in the last two hours, and consider the Pidurangala rock next door for the view of Sigiriya itself.
- If the hill country train is running on your dates, book reserved seats as far ahead as allowed. Unreserved carriages in peak season are standing room only.
- Avoid full moon (Poya) weekends at pilgrimage sites like Adam's Peak and Anuradhapura, when they are packed with pilgrims.
Open or closed
- Every full moon (Poya) day is a public holiday. Alcohol sales are banned, and some shops and restaurants close.
- Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid April closes many businesses for several days. Plan transport and meals ahead.
- Yala National Park often closes its main zone for part of the dry period, roughly September to mid October, to let the park recover.
- Rough seas during the southwest monsoon (May to September) close many beaches on the south and west coasts to swimming and stop some whale-watching boats.
With kids in tow
- Sri Lanka is compact and very welcoming to children. Safaris, elephants, whales, the train, and beaches keep kids engaged.
- Long drives are the main challenge. Hire a car and driver and keep daily travel to three or four hours.
- Beaches on the south coast can have strong currents. Choose protected bays such as Unawatuna or Hiriketiya for young swimmers.
- For homeschool families: Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Galle trace 2,000 years of Sri Lankan history, from ancient Buddhist kingdoms to Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule.
Getting there
- Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo is the main gateway. There are no nonstops from the US; connect through the Gulf (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi), Istanbul, or Singapore.
- SriLankan Airlines connects Colombo with many hubs in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
- Most visitors hire a car and driver for the island loop. Trains are scenic but slow; domestic flights are limited.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
