The straight answer

The best time to visit Goa is November through February: dry, sunny beach weather, calm seas, and every beach shack and market open.

Go from November through February. The monsoon is over, the sea is calm and swimmable, humidity is at its lowest, and the licensed beach shacks, flea markets, and beach huts are all up and running. January and February are the sweet spot: warm and dry without December's holiday prices.

December is Goa's biggest month, and Christmas to New Year is a different trip entirely: the state fills with domestic visitors and parties, and hotel prices can triple. If you want Goa at its liveliest, go then and book months ahead; if you want beaches and calm, avoid those two weeks.

The monsoon, roughly June through September, transforms Goa. It is one of the rainiest parts of India, with very heavy rain. The beach shacks are taken down, swimming is dangerous and often banned, and many beach businesses close. In exchange the countryside turns intensely green, the waterfalls fill, and prices crash. March to May is hot and humid, and many shacks begin closing in May.

Why go to Goa

Beaches for every mood

Party beaches in the north around Baga and Anjuna, cliffs at Vagator, and quiet crescents at Palolem, Agonda, and Patnem in the south.

Portuguese heritage

Goa was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years until 1961. The churches of Old Goa are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Panaji's Fontainhas quarter is full of colorful Latin-style houses.

Goan food

Fish curry rice, vindaloo, xacuti, prawn balchao, bebinca, and feni, the local cashew spirit, at beach shacks and old family restaurants.

Easy and relaxed

Goa is one of India's most laid-back and easy places to travel, with scooters, beach huts, and markets.

OctoberNovember

Diwali and Narakasur

October or November, set by the lunar calendar

Goa's twist: giant effigies of the demon Narakasur are built and burned before dawn on the eve of Diwali.

November

International Film Festival of India

Late November

India's main government-run film festival, held in Panaji.

December

Feast of St Francis Xavier

December 3 every year

Pilgrims come to Old Goa to honor the saint. His body is brought down for a public exposition only about once every ten years, most recently from late 2024 into early 2025.

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid December 20 to January 2. Rates spike, and the beaches and roads are packed with holiday traffic.
  • Stay in south Goa (Agonda, Patnem, Palolem) for calmer beaches, and visit north Goa on day trips.
  • Visit Old Goa churches early in the morning on a weekday, when day-trip tour buses are fewer.
  • Early November and late February are the smart months: full dry-season weather with a fraction of the peak crowds.

Open or closed

  • Licensed beach shacks operate roughly from October or November to May. They are dismantled during the monsoon and many beach huts and small hotels close.
  • During the monsoon (June to September), swimming is dangerous; lifeguards post red flags and swimming is often banned.
  • Jeep safaris to Dudhsagar Falls are usually suspended during the monsoon for safety.
  • Markets like the Anjuna Flea Market and the Saturday night markets operate in the dry season only.

With kids in tow

  • South Goa's calmer beaches are best for families with young kids. The north can be loud and party-focused, especially in December.
  • Watch for rip currents even in the dry season. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and follow the flags.
  • Kid favorites include spice farm tours, boat trips to spot dolphins, and the forts.
  • For homeschool families: Old Goa and Fontainhas are a vivid lesson in the Portuguese empire in Asia and how it shaped Goan culture.

Getting there

  • Goa has two airports: Dabolim (GOI) in central Goa and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX) in the north, which opened in 2023. Check which one your flight uses; they are more than an hour apart.
  • There are no nonstop flights from the US. Connect through Delhi, Mumbai, or a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi.
  • Trains on the Konkan Railway connect Goa with Mumbai and Kerala, with Madgaon and Thivim the main stations.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
