What August is like in Goa

August is still monsoon season, with highs near 83F (28C) and frequent rain, though dry breaks become more common. The sea stays rough and beach shacks are still closed. What August does well is inland Goa: spice farms, rice fields and waterfalls are at their greenest, and prices are at the lowest point of the year.

It is a mixed month for travelers who want green landscapes, heritage and a quiet, cheap stay, not beach days. Families wanting swimming and sand should aim for November to February. If you like the monsoon look but want less rain, September is a touch drier.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Goa this month.

01

Spice farms at their lushest

Plantation tours near Ponda are at their greenest, and most include a Goan lunch.

02

Waterfalls in full flow

Streams and falls across the Western Ghats foothills are running high. Only visit spots that are officially open, as some are closed for safety in the rains.

03

Cheapest rooms of the year

Resorts with pools that stay open drop to their lowest rates, a good fit for a rainy-day family stay.

What to pack for August

  • A packable rain jacket
  • Sandals with grip for muddy farm paths
  • Leech socks or long socks for walks
  • Dry bags for electronics

Our timing tip

Plan spice farm visits and drives in the morning, which are often drier, and keep afternoons flexible for heavy showers.

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid December 20 to January 2. Rates spike, and the beaches and roads are packed with holiday traffic.
  • Stay in south Goa (Agonda, Patnem, Palolem) for calmer beaches, and visit north Goa on day trips.
  • Visit Old Goa churches early in the morning on a weekday, when day-trip tour buses are fewer.
  • Early November and late February are the smart months: full dry-season weather with a fraction of the peak crowds.

Know before you go

  • Licensed beach shacks operate roughly from October or November to May. They are dismantled during the monsoon and many beach huts and small hotels close.
  • During the monsoon (June to September), swimming is dangerous; lifeguards post red flags and swimming is often banned.
  • Jeep safaris to Dudhsagar Falls are usually suspended during the monsoon for safety.
  • Markets like the Anjuna Flea Market and the Saturday night markets operate in the dry season only.
