What January is like in Goa
January is one of Goa's best months. Days are dry and sunny with highs near 89F (32C), evenings are pleasantly cool, and the sea is calm and clear. Beach shacks, hut camps and the dry-season markets are all running. Once the New Year crowds leave in the first few days, the beaches loosen up and prices ease off the December peak.
It suits nearly everyone: families on the calm south Goa beaches, couples, first-timers and anyone who wants reliable sun. The only people who might look elsewhere are those hunting the lowest prices, who will find similar weather in late February for less.
Make the most of January
What is especially good about Goa this month.
Calm swimming seas
The water at Palolem, Agonda and Patnem is at its gentlest, which makes it the easiest month for kids to swim. Stick to lifeguarded beaches and follow the flags.
Anjuna Flea Market
The Wednesday market is in full swing, with food, clothes and crafts. Go in the late afternoon when the heat drops.
Old Goa in cool mornings
The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral are best visited early, when the air is still fresh and tour buses have not arrived.
What to pack for January
- Swimwear, a rash guard for kids and reef-safe sunscreen
- A light long-sleeve layer for cool evenings on the beach
- Clothes covering shoulders and knees for the Old Goa churches
- Mosquito repellent for evenings
Our timing tip
Arrive after the first few days of January, when New Year rates drop and the north Goa roads calm down.

Things to do in Goa
Old Goa churches
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, with the relics of St Francis Xavier, and the Se Cathedral. Go early before the day-trip buses arrive.
Fontainhas, Panaji
The old Latin quarter, with colorful houses and small cafes. Best explored on foot in the morning.
South Goa beaches
Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, and Cola are calmer than the north. Beach hut camps operate from about November to April.
Anjuna Flea Market
A Wednesday market that runs in the dry season, roughly November to April.
Dudhsagar Falls
A huge four-tiered waterfall on the Karnataka border. It is fullest in the monsoon, but jeep access is usually suspended then; visit from October.
Spice plantations near Ponda
Tours with a Goan lunch. Especially lush after the monsoon.
Beat the crowds
- Avoid December 20 to January 2. Rates spike, and the beaches and roads are packed with holiday traffic.
- Stay in south Goa (Agonda, Patnem, Palolem) for calmer beaches, and visit north Goa on day trips.
- Visit Old Goa churches early in the morning on a weekday, when day-trip tour buses are fewer.
- Early November and late February are the smart months: full dry-season weather with a fraction of the peak crowds.
Know before you go
- Licensed beach shacks operate roughly from October or November to May. They are dismantled during the monsoon and many beach huts and small hotels close.
- During the monsoon (June to September), swimming is dangerous; lifeguards post red flags and swimming is often banned.
- Jeep safaris to Dudhsagar Falls are usually suspended during the monsoon for safety.
- Markets like the Anjuna Flea Market and the Saturday night markets operate in the dry season only.
