What July is like in Goa

July is Goa's wettest month. Highs sit near 83F (28C), downpours are heavy and frequent, and the sea is rough, with swimming unsafe. Beach shacks are gone, many beach businesses are closed, and Dudhsagar jeep trips are usually suspended. The upside is very low prices and deeply green countryside.

Skip July for a beach or family holiday. It only makes sense for travelers who love rain, want a cheap heritage and food trip, or are visiting friends. For beaches, come November to February; for green landscapes with less rain, late August or September is kinder.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Goa this month.

01

Monsoon food

Old family restaurants in Panaji and Margao stay open, and a fish curry rice lunch during a downpour is a Goan classic.

02

Fontainhas in the rain

The colorful Latin quarter looks its most atmospheric on wet streets, and you will have it to yourself.

03

Lowest prices of the year

Resorts that stay open offer their deepest discounts, often with meals included.

What to pack for July

  • A long waterproof jacket and rain pants
  • Quick-dry footwear
  • Dry bags and a spare phone charger
  • Insect repellent

Our timing tip

Rent a car with a driver rather than a scooter in July, since roads flood quickly and rain makes riding dangerous.

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid December 20 to January 2. Rates spike, and the beaches and roads are packed with holiday traffic.
  • Stay in south Goa (Agonda, Patnem, Palolem) for calmer beaches, and visit north Goa on day trips.
  • Visit Old Goa churches early in the morning on a weekday, when day-trip tour buses are fewer.
  • Early November and late February are the smart months: full dry-season weather with a fraction of the peak crowds.

Know before you go

  • Licensed beach shacks operate roughly from October or November to May. They are dismantled during the monsoon and many beach huts and small hotels close.
  • During the monsoon (June to September), swimming is dangerous; lifeguards post red flags and swimming is often banned.
  • Jeep safaris to Dudhsagar Falls are usually suspended during the monsoon for safety.
  • Markets like the Anjuna Flea Market and the Saturday night markets operate in the dry season only.
