The straight answer
The best places to travel in August are the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara at peak river-crossing season, the Swiss Alps and Iceland in high summer, and Edinburgh for the Fringe, with Fiji and Peru shining in the southern winter.
August is July's twin with sharper edges. The same northern showpieces, the Alps, Iceland, Alaska's first half, remain in prime condition, and East Africa is at the absolute peak of river-crossing season. But August is also when Europe's own vacation exodus peaks, when Mediterranean cities both empty of locals and fill with visitors, and when the Atlantic hurricane season starts meaning business.
The cultural counterweight is Britain: the Edinburgh Festival Fringe turns Scotland's capital into the world's biggest arts festival for most of the month, and the UK and Ireland offer green, temperate relief from the continental heat. Down in the southern winter, Fiji stays dry and mild, Peru's trekking season rolls on, and southern Africa's game viewing sharpens as water sources shrink.
August's skip list writes itself. The Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and Florida enter the heart of hurricane season. Seville and inland southern Spain regularly top 105F (41C). Texas is at its most punishing. And while Paris in August is famously quiet, enough small restaurants close for annual vacation that it belongs in the fine print, not the headline.

- Seville and inland southern Spain. Regularly the hottest place in Europe, with afternoons past 105F (41C). The Spanish coasts cope; the inland cities in August are an endurance sport.
- Texas. The most brutal stretch of the Texas year: weeks of 100F (38C) and up with no meaningful relief. Save the state for October through April.
- Dubai and the Gulf. Peak heat and peak coastal humidity make even short outdoor stretches punishing. The region's season restarts around November.
- Paris, if small restaurants are the point. The city stays open at the top: museums, big sights, department stores. But a meaningful share of neighborhood bistros and boutiques close for annual vacation. Fine for first-timers, frustrating for food pilgrims.
