What August is like in Oman
August is a Salalah-only month. Muscat stays near 100F (38C) and humid, while Dhofar is cool and drizzly, with waterfalls running and camels grazing on green hills in the mist. The khareef is in full swing, so Salalah is the busy part of the country and the north is empty.
This month suits travelers curious about the monsoon, families who want cool weather in summer, and anyone connecting from the Gulf. It does not suit people who want sunshine, beaches, or desert camping. For the rest of Oman, the time to come is November through March.
Make the most of August
What is especially good about Oman this month.
Waterfalls in Dhofar
Falls like Ayn Athum run strongest during the khareef. Outside the season they often dry up.
Camels in the mist
Green hills, low cloud, and grazing camels are the classic Salalah khareef scene.
Frankincense history
Dhofar's frankincense sites are a direct lesson in Arabian trade history, good for curious kids.
What to pack for August
- A rain shell and a quick-dry layer
- Waterproof shoes or sandals with grip
- A light fleece for foggy evenings
- A dry bag for your phone at the waterfalls
Our timing tip
Drive the Salalah hill roads in the morning, since fog tends to thicken and visibility drops later in the day.

What's on in August
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
Shifts about 11 days earlier each year; check the current dates
Restaurants often close until sunset and opening hours shift. Eid brings busy roads and full hotels as Omanis travel.
Salalah khareef season
Roughly late June to early September
Monsoon mist turns Dhofar's hills green. Festival events run in Salalah during the season, which draws visitors from across the Gulf.
Turtle nesting and hatching at Ras al Jinz
Year-round, with nesting peaking in summer and hatching in late summer and fall
Guided night and dawn viewings at the reserve. Visitor numbers are controlled.
Things to do in Oman
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat
Open to non-Muslim visitors on weekday mornings, closed Fridays. Modest dress required, with head coverings for women.
Royal Opera House Muscat
A striking building with a season that runs through the cooler months. Tours are available when there are no performances.
Wadi Shab
A hike and swim through a canyon to a hidden cave pool. Go early in the day and avoid Friday crowds.
Nizwa Fort and souq
Friday morning brings the famous livestock market. The fort's round tower gives views over the date palms.
Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar
Mountain hikes, canyon views, and terraced villages. A 4x4 is required for the Jebel Akhdar road.
Wahiba Sands
Desert camps, dune driving, and sunset over the sands. Best from November through March.
Beat the crowds
- Visit Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid early on a weekday. Fridays and Saturdays bring local families and tour groups from Muscat and Dubai.
- Travel in November or March rather than late December to early January, when European and Gulf holiday demand peaks.
- Avoid the Eid holidays for Salalah and the mountains, when domestic and Gulf visitors fill hotels and roads.
- Book the Grand Mosque for opening time, before tour buses arrive from the cruise ships in winter.
Know before you go
- The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors only on weekday mornings, and closed to them on Fridays.
- During Ramadan, most restaurants close until sunset, opening hours shorten, and public eating and drinking during daylight is not allowed. Hotels usually serve guests discreetly.
- From May to September, many desert camps in the Wahiba Sands close or reduce operations due to heat.
- Salalah's attractions, including waterfalls like Ayn Athum, run strongest during the khareef; outside it, the landscape is brown and dry.
