What January is like in Oman
January is Oman at its most comfortable. Muscat sits near 77F (25C) under clear skies, the desert cools off enough at night for a campfire, and the mountains around Jebel Shams can get properly cold after dark. It is peak season, so desert camps and good hotels fill up, but even now Oman never feels crowded the way Dubai does.
This month suits road trippers, hikers, and families who want wadis, forts, and dunes in easy weather. Couples wanting a mix of beach and culture will be happy too. If you want the same weather with lower prices, look at November or March instead. Check whether Ramadan falls near your dates, since it shifts earlier every year.
Make the most of January
What is especially good about Oman this month.
Desert nights in the Wahiba Sands
Cool evenings and clear skies make a night at a Sharqiya Sands camp comfortable. Dune drives at sunset are the classic plan.
Jebel Shams rim hikes
Crisp mountain air is ideal for walking the canyon rim. Bring warm layers for the evenings up top.
Royal Opera House season
The opera house runs its season through the cooler months, so January is a good time to catch a performance or take a tour.
What to pack for January
- A warm fleece or down jacket for mountain and desert nights
- Sturdy hiking shoes for wadi trails
- Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, plus a scarf for the Grand Mosque
- Sandals you can swim in for wadi pools

What's on in January
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
Shifts about 11 days earlier each year; check the current dates
Restaurants often close until sunset and opening hours shift. Eid brings busy roads and full hotels as Omanis travel.
Things to do in Oman
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat
Open to non-Muslim visitors on weekday mornings, closed Fridays. Modest dress required, with head coverings for women.
Royal Opera House Muscat
A striking building with a season that runs through the cooler months. Tours are available when there are no performances.
Wadi Shab
A hike and swim through a canyon to a hidden cave pool. Go early in the day and avoid Friday crowds.
Nizwa Fort and souq
Friday morning brings the famous livestock market. The fort's round tower gives views over the date palms.
Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar
Mountain hikes, canyon views, and terraced villages. A 4x4 is required for the Jebel Akhdar road.
Wahiba Sands
Desert camps, dune driving, and sunset over the sands. Best from November through March.
Beat the crowds
- Visit Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid early on a weekday. Fridays and Saturdays bring local families and tour groups from Muscat and Dubai.
- Travel in November or March rather than late December to early January, when European and Gulf holiday demand peaks.
- Avoid the Eid holidays for Salalah and the mountains, when domestic and Gulf visitors fill hotels and roads.
- Book the Grand Mosque for opening time, before tour buses arrive from the cruise ships in winter.
Know before you go
- The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors only on weekday mornings, and closed to them on Fridays.
- During Ramadan, most restaurants close until sunset, opening hours shorten, and public eating and drinking during daylight is not allowed. Hotels usually serve guests discreetly.
- From May to September, many desert camps in the Wahiba Sands close or reduce operations due to heat.
- Salalah's attractions, including waterfalls like Ayn Athum, run strongest during the khareef; outside it, the landscape is brown and dry.
