What May is like in Oman

May is very hot. Muscat highs run near 102F (39C) and the desert climbs higher, which makes wadi hikes and dune trips hard work. Many Wahiba Sands camps close or cut back for the summer. Crowds are very low and hotels offer real discounts, especially resorts with big pools.

Honestly, most people should skip May. It can work for a short resort stay or a mountain hotel on Jebel Akhdar, and for travelers who only want a pool and a cheap rate. For a proper Oman road trip, go between November and March instead.

Make the most of May

What is especially good about Oman this month.

01

Resort pool deals

Muscat beach resorts discount heavily, so a pool-and-spa break can be very good value.

02

Mountain escape

Jebel Akhdar stays noticeably cooler than the coast, making it the one comfortable base this month.

03

Empty sights

Forts in Nizwa and Bahla are close to empty, if you go right at opening.

What to pack for May

  • Loose, light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs
  • A wide-brim hat and good sunglasses
  • Electrolyte packets and a large water bottle
  • High-SPF sunscreen

Our timing tip

Plan every outdoor stop for the first hours after sunrise and spend the middle of the day indoors or in the pool.

Beat the crowds

  • Visit Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid early on a weekday. Fridays and Saturdays bring local families and tour groups from Muscat and Dubai.
  • Travel in November or March rather than late December to early January, when European and Gulf holiday demand peaks.
  • Avoid the Eid holidays for Salalah and the mountains, when domestic and Gulf visitors fill hotels and roads.
  • Book the Grand Mosque for opening time, before tour buses arrive from the cruise ships in winter.

Know before you go

  • The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors only on weekday mornings, and closed to them on Fridays.
  • During Ramadan, most restaurants close until sunset, opening hours shorten, and public eating and drinking during daylight is not allowed. Hotels usually serve guests discreetly.
  • From May to September, many desert camps in the Wahiba Sands close or reduce operations due to heat.
  • Salalah's attractions, including waterfalls like Ayn Athum, run strongest during the khareef; outside it, the landscape is brown and dry.
