From June through September the state's 10,000-plus lakes turn into a vast playground: canoes slipping through the Boundary Waters, cabin weekends 'up north', Lake Superior's dramatic North Shore at hiking temperature, and the Twin Cities running festivals nearly every weekend. Late August belongs to the State Fair, a twelve-day institution that draws around two million people.
The honest calendar notes: March and April are melt and mud, November is gray limbo, and winter is serious, with January highs often in the teens F and stretches below zero. But Minnesotans famously refuse to hibernate, and a winter visit built around the St. Paul Winter Carnival, North Shore ice, or even aurora hunting near the Canadian border can be genuinely great, provided you pack like you mean it.
