We are being honest about the borderline cases. Tulum is not on this list because that ship has sailed. Holbox and Sayulita are on it with a flashing caution light: both are wonderful and both are changing fast, so go sooner rather than later and skip the holiday peaks.

A car-free island of sand streets north of Cancun, with whale sharks offshore from roughly June to September and bioluminescence on dark summer nights. The secret is out and development is accelerating, so go soon and skip holiday weeks.

Caye Caulker, Belize
The island motto is literally Go Slow: golf carts, sandy lanes, and snorkel boats out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley on the Belize Barrier Reef. It remains the Caribbean at backpacker-friendly prices.
03Nosara
Nosara, Costa Rica
Playa Guiones is one of the most consistent learner-friendly surf beaches anywhere, backed by a jungle town that runs on yoga and smoothie bowls. Nearby Ostional is famous for its mass arrivals of nesting olive ridley turtles.
04Tavira
Tavira, Portugal
The eastern Algarve's handsome old river town, where a short ferry crosses to Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island of long, uncrowded Atlantic sand. It is everything the overbuilt central Algarve is not.

Comporta, Portugal
Rice paddies, umbrella pines, and a near-empty Atlantic beach about an hour south of Lisbon, with a low-rise, barefoot-chic scene that has so far resisted big hotels. June and September give you the beach without the Lisbon-weekender surge.
Paternoster
Paternoster, South Africa
A whitewashed fishing village on the West Coast about two hours from Cape Town, known for crayfish pulled from the cold Atlantic and some of the country's most praised small restaurants. In late winter the surrounding coast erupts in wildflowers.

Sri Lanka's east-coast surf town, built around the long right-hand point break at Main Point, with elephants and leopards in the nearby national parks. Its season runs opposite the island's southwest beaches, peaking May through September.
Sayulita
Sayulita, Mexico
A Pacific surf town on the Riviera Nayarit with a genuinely fun beginner wave, Huichol art in the plaza, and fish tacos everywhere. It is no secret and gets packed over holidays, but midweek in shoulder months it still charms.

Folly Beach, South Carolina
Charleston's scruffy, likable surf beach, with the Washout break on one end and the walk to the Morris Island Lighthouse view on the other. You get real-city restaurants fifteen minutes away and a town that never went glossy.

A Gulf Coast fishing town on Mustang Island where you can still drive onto the beach, with one of Texas's biggest charter fleets and wintering whooping cranes at the nearby Aransas refuge. Spring and fall dodge both the summer crowds and hurricane peak.
