The straight answer
The best time to visit Colorado is June through September for hiking and alpine scenery, or January through March for prime ski conditions; the months to skip are the muddy shoulder gaps in April, May, and November.
Colorado runs on two clocks. For summer, aim mid June through September: that is when the high trails melt out, wildflowers peak in July, alpine passes like Trail Ridge Road are open, and afternoon storms are the only real planning constraint. For skiing, the deep, reliable months are January through March, when the big resorts from Vail to Steamboat are fully open and the snowpack is at its best.
The trap is the in-between. Late April through May and most of November are mud season in the mountains: lifts closed, high trails half thawed, and many resort-town restaurants shuttered for staff vacations. Denver and the Front Range stay pleasant and cheap in those months, but if you came for the mountains themselves, time your trip to one of the two real seasons.

Summer

Fall
September is a jewel: golden aspens from roughly mid September to early October, crisp air, elk bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park. By November the mountains slip into pre-ski limbo.
Winter
Best-in-nation skiing, with January through March the deep months. Expect peak pricing and I-70 traffic on powder weekends; midweek trips are dramatically calmer and cheaper.
