The Best National Parks Nobody Visits
Skip the entry line at Zion. These parks are just as good and nearly empty.
The straight answer
The best national parks almost nobody visits are Great Basin, North Cascades, Isle Royale, and Capitol Reef: each delivers headline scenery with a fraction of the crowds at the famous parks.
While Great Smoky Mountains and Zion absorb millions of visitors a year, parks like Great Basin, North Cascades, and Isle Royale see a tiny fraction of that, and they are not lesser parks. They are glaciers, ancient trees, and island wilderness that simply sit farther from an interstate.
The least visited national parks are usually the least visited for one reason: access. Isle Royale requires a ferry or seaplane, North Cascades hides three hours from Seattle, and Great Basin sits on a lonely stretch of Nevada highway. Solve the logistics and the reward is a national park experience that no longer exists at the famous ones: trailhead parking at noon, campsites on arrival, silence.
Season is everything with this list. The mountain parks have short, glorious windows from July to September, the desert parks flip to spring and fall, and Congaree in South Carolina is best when everything else is closed. Match the park to the month and you can have one almost to yourself.
01Great Basin National Park
Baker, Nevada
Ancient bristlecone pines, among the oldest living trees on Earth, grow near the summit ridge of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, and the marble Lehman Caves run beneath the park. Its remote Nevada location also makes it one of the darkest night skies in the country.
02North Cascades National Park
Washington State
The most glaciated landscape in the lower 48, with over 300 glaciers hanging off jagged peaks three hours from Seattle, yet it stays one of the least visited parks in the system. The turquoise of glacier-fed Diablo Lake looks fake and is not.
03Isle Royale National Park
Lake Superior, Michigan
A wilderness island reachable only by ferry or seaplane, home to moose and wolves whose interplay is the subject of the world's longest-running predator-prey study. The park closes completely from November to mid-April, so summer is not just best, it is the only option.
04Congaree National Park
Hopkins, South Carolina
The largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States, walked on a boardwalk beneath some of the tallest trees in the eastern US. For about two weeks around late May, synchronous fireflies flash in unison, one of the few places in the country you can see it.
05Guadalupe Mountains National Park
West Texas
Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet, rises from an ancient fossilized reef, and the hike to the summit is one of the best in the state. In late October and early November, McKittrick Canyon's bigtooth maples put on Texas's most surprising fall-color show.
06Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Montrose, Colorado
A gorge so narrow and deep that parts of it receive minutes of sunlight a day, with the Painted Wall, Colorado's tallest cliff at about 2,250 feet, streaked in pink pegmatite. The South Rim drive delivers Grand Canyon-grade drama in an hour, usually with nobody at the overlooks.

Northern California
All four types of volcano found on Earth sit inside one park, along with Bumpass Hell, a boardwalk basin of boiling springs and steaming fumaroles that feels like a pocket Yellowstone without the traffic. Deep snowpack keeps the high road closed well into summer, so aim for July onward.
08Voyageurs National Park
International Falls, Minnesota
A park that is mostly water, best explored by houseboat or canoe among hundreds of islands along the Canadian border. It is a certified International Dark Sky Park, and its northern latitude makes it one of the better spots in the lower 48 to catch the aurora.
Capitol Reef National Park
Torrey, Utah
The overlooked member of Utah's Mighty Five sits on the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile wrinkle in the Earth's crust. In the historic Fruita district, you can pick fruit in season from orchards planted by Mormon pioneers, then eat pie from the Gifford House with red cliffs on every side.
Pinnacles National Park
Central California
America's newest landscape-scale park, upgraded in 2013, protects the eroded spires of an ancient volcano and serves as a release site for endangered California condors, which you can actually spot circling the High Peaks. Talus caves shelter bat colonies and stay cool when the trails bake.

Split the list by climate. The mountain and lake parks, North Cascades, Isle Royale, Lassen, Voyageurs, Great Basin, and Black Canyon, are at their best July through September. The desert and Southern parks flip: Guadalupe Mountains, Pinnacles, Capitol Reef, and Congaree are best in spring and fall and can be brutal in midsummer.
Do these parks require reservations?
Mostly no, which is half the appeal: no timed-entry systems like Glacier or Arches. The exceptions are logistics, not permits. Isle Royale ferries and seaplanes book out weeks ahead, popular Voyageurs houseboats go early, and Lehman Caves tours at Great Basin sell out in summer, so reserve those specifics even though the gates are open.
Are these parks good for kids?
Several are ideal. Congaree's boardwalk loop is flat and stroller-friendly, Capitol Reef adds fruit picking and pie, and Lassen's hydrothermal boardwalks feel like a science lesson outdoors. Isle Royale and North Cascades skew toward older kids who can handle real hiking and, for Isle Royale, a long boat ride.
