What August is like in Los Cabos

August is the hottest month in Los Cabos, with highs near 95F (35C) and muggy air. The water is the warmest of the year, and prices drop deeply. The downside is real: you are in the heart of hurricane season, and a storm can close the airport or cut power. Crowds are light.

August suits flexible travelers and divers who want warm water and low prices and can change plans if a storm threatens. Families on a fixed school calendar and anyone who hates heat should look elsewhere. For a safer bet on weather at decent prices, try late May or early June instead.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Los Cabos this month.

01

Warmest water of the year

No wetsuit needed. This is the most comfortable time for long snorkeling sessions and dives.

02

Deep discounts

Many resorts cut rates sharply, so upgrades that would be out of reach in winter can be affordable.

03

Empty beaches

With few visitors, even the popular swimmable bays can feel quiet on a weekday morning.

What to pack for August

  • A portable fan or cooling towel
  • A light rain jacket
  • A power bank in case of outages
  • Loose, breathable clothing

Our timing tip

Book only refundable rooms and flights, and have a backup plan if a storm forms in the week before your trip.

Beat the crowds

  • Aim for late January through early March, skipping the first week of January and the middle weeks of March when US spring break peaks.
  • Base in San Jose del Cabo instead of Cabo San Lucas for quieter streets, and drive in for the marina and boat trips.
  • Book boat trips to the Arch and whale tours for the first departure of the day, when water is flatter and the marina is not yet a traffic jam.
  • May and early June are the value secret: dry, warm, emptier, and before the hurricane-season discount crowd arrives in late summer.

Know before you go

  • September and early October: a noticeable number of restaurants and some smaller hotels close for maintenance or staff vacation. The big resorts stay open.
  • Hurricane season runs mid May through November, peaking August to early October. Storms can close the airport and cut power for days; always check refund terms.
  • Whale-watching tours only operate during the official season, roughly mid December to mid April. Outside that window, the whales are gone.
  • Many Pacific-side beaches are closed to swimming by red flags year-round due to rip currents. Swim only where locals and lifeguards do.
