What March is like in Los Cabos

March warms up nicely, with dry days and highs near 82F (28C). Whales are still around for most of the month, and the evenings are pleasant rather than chilly. The big catch is US spring break: mid March weekends in Cabo San Lucas get loud, crowded and expensive. San Jose del Cabo stays calmer and hosts its patron saint festival around March 19.

Early March is excellent for families and couples who want whales and warmer air. Mid March is best left to the spring break crowd unless you base yourself in San Jose del Cabo or a quiet Corridor resort. If you want the same weather at better value, aim for late April or May.

Make the most of March

What is especially good about Los Cabos this month.

01

Fiestas Tradicionales de San Jose

Around March 19, San Jose del Cabo celebrates its patron saint with fair rides, food stalls and music in the main plaza. It is a local party, not a tourist show.

02

Last good weeks of whale season

Humpbacks and gray whales are still passing, and the warmer air makes long boat trips more comfortable than in January.

03

Warmer snorkeling at Chileno Bay

The water is still cool but the air is warm, so a morning at Chileno or Santa Maria bay feels better than it did a month ago.

What to pack for March

  • A rash guard for snorkeling and sun protection
  • A light layer for evenings on the water
  • Sandals you can walk the San Jose plaza in
  • A refillable water bottle for warm afternoons

Our timing tip

Check US college spring break calendars and avoid the middle two weeks of March in Cabo San Lucas, or stay in San Jose del Cabo and visit the marina by day.

Beat the crowds

  • Aim for late January through early March, skipping the first week of January and the middle weeks of March when US spring break peaks.
  • Base in San Jose del Cabo instead of Cabo San Lucas for quieter streets, and drive in for the marina and boat trips.
  • Book boat trips to the Arch and whale tours for the first departure of the day, when water is flatter and the marina is not yet a traffic jam.
  • May and early June are the value secret: dry, warm, emptier, and before the hurricane-season discount crowd arrives in late summer.

Know before you go

  • September and early October: a noticeable number of restaurants and some smaller hotels close for maintenance or staff vacation. The big resorts stay open.
  • Hurricane season runs mid May through November, peaking August to early October. Storms can close the airport and cut power for days; always check refund terms.
  • Whale-watching tours only operate during the official season, roughly mid December to mid April. Outside that window, the whales are gone.
  • Many Pacific-side beaches are closed to swimming by red flags year-round due to rip currents. Swim only where locals and lifeguards do.
