Wildflower Superblooms and Flower Seasons: Where and When to Go
From desert superblooms in February to alpine meadows in August and South Africa's daisies in September.

The straight answer
The best wildflower trips are California's desert superblooms in late February and March of wet years, Texas bluebonnets and Keukenhof's tulips in April, the lavender of Provence and Hokkaido in late June and July, alpine meadows at Mount Rainier and Glacier in July and August, and South Africa's Namaqualand daisies in August and September.
Wildflower travel rewards timing more than almost anything else. A desert superbloom can last two or three weeks, a lavender field is cut for harvest within weeks of peaking, and an alpine meadow is snow for most of the year. Get the week right and you walk through color to the horizon. Get it wrong and you see brown hills.
The desert superblooms of California and Chile are the least predictable. They depend on a wet winter with well-spaced rain, and in dry years there is almost nothing. When they do happen, as in California in 2017, 2019, and 2023, they are spectacular. Cultivated displays like Keukenhof and the lavender of Provence and Hokkaido are far more reliable, and the mountain meadows follow the snowmelt with good consistency.
Watch the bloom reports as your window approaches: California State Parks and the relevant land agencies publish updates in spring. And in every one of these places, stay on the trail. Superblooms have been damaged by crowds trampling fields for photos, and some sites now close areas to protect them.
01Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Borrego Springs, California
California's largest state park turns purple, yellow, and white with sand verbena, desert sunflowers, and dune evening primrose after a wet winter, and it is usually the first of the state's desert blooms. Superbloom years like 2017 and 2019 drew huge crowds, so go midweek.
02Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve
Lancaster, California
When conditions are right, the hills here turn solid orange with California poppies, the state flower. Poppies close in wind, cold, and overcast, so visit on a sunny, calm day, ideally late morning.
Carrizo Plain National Monument
San Luis Obispo County, California
California's largest remaining native grassland, where in superbloom years the Temblor Range is painted in bands of yellow and purple wildflowers. It is remote, with no services and dirt roads, so bring water and fuel.
04Texas Hill Country bluebonnets
Fredericksburg, Ennis, and the Hill Country, Texas
Bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, line roadsides and fill pastures across the state, with Indian paintbrush mixed in. The Willow City Loop near Fredericksburg and the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails south of Dallas are classic drives, peaking from late March into mid April.
05Keukenhof
Lisse, Netherlands
About seven million bulbs planted every year in one of the world's largest flower gardens, surrounded by working bulb fields that turn into stripes of color. The garden opens for only about eight weeks, from late March to mid May, with tulips usually peaking in mid to late April.
06Castelluccio di Norcia
Piano Grande, Umbria, Italy
Each year the high plain below the village of Castelluccio blooms in the fiorita, a patchwork of red poppies, blue cornflowers, and yellow mustard among the lentil fields. Peak is usually late June to mid July, depending on the season.
07Provence lavender
Valensole Plateau and Senanque Abbey, France
The lavender fields of the Valensole plateau and the rows in front of the Abbaye de Senanque bloom purple from late June, with harvest starting in mid July. Go early in the morning to beat both the heat and the tour buses.
08Furano lavender
Central Hokkaido, Japan
Farm Tomita and the fields around Furano and Biei bloom purple in July, alongside stripes of poppies, baby's breath, and marigolds. Hokkaido largely escapes Japan's rainy season, which makes July here far more pleasant than on Honshu.
09Crested Butte
Gunnison County, Colorado
Named the Wildflower Capital of Colorado by the state legislature, with meadows of lupine, columbine, and mule's ears around the old mining town. The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival usually runs in July, with guided walks and workshops.
10Paradise meadows, Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
The subalpine meadows at Paradise are among the most famous wildflower displays in the US, with lupine, magenta paintbrush, and avalanche lilies against the glaciers of Rainier. The bloom follows the snowmelt and usually peaks from late July into mid August.
11Logan Pass, Glacier National Park
Montana
Glacier lilies push up right behind the melting snow, followed by beargrass, paintbrush, and fireweed in the high meadows around Logan Pass. The Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens fully in late June or July, and timed-entry reservations may be required in summer.
Namaqualand daisies
Namaqua National Park, Northern Cape, South Africa
After winter rains, the dry semi-desert of Namaqualand bursts into a carpet of orange and white daisies and thousands of other species, many found nowhere else. Flowers open in the warmth of late morning and face the sun, so drive with the sun behind you.
Western Australia wildflower season
Perth to Kalbarri and the Coral Coast, Western Australia
Western Australia has one of the richest floras on Earth, with more than 12,000 species, most found nowhere else, including kangaroo paws and everlastings. The bloom moves south from the north of the state from late winter into spring.
14Desierto florido
Atacama Desert, Chile
In rare years with enough rain, often linked to El Nino, the southern Atacama near Copiapo and Vallenar blooms with pink, purple, and yellow flowers in one of the most unlikely sights in nature. It does not happen every year, so check the forecasts before planning a trip around it.
Quick answers
What is a superbloom?
A superbloom is an unusually dense wildflower display in the desert, when a wet winter triggers seeds that can lie dormant for years to germinate at once. California has had notable superblooms in recent years, including 2017, 2019, and 2023.
When is the best time to see wildflowers in California?
In the low deserts like Anza-Borrego, late February through March. In the Antelope Valley and Carrizo Plain, March into April. In the Sierra Nevada and other mountains, June through August as the snow melts.
When do the tulips bloom in the Netherlands?
Tulips typically peak from mid to late April, depending on the weather. Keukenhof opens from about late March to mid May, and the bulb fields around Lisse are in full color in the middle of that window.
When is lavender season in Provence?
Lavender in Provence usually blooms from late June through July, with the best color in early to mid July. Harvest begins in mid July, so fields can be cut by late in the month.
