The straight answer

The best time to visit Glacier National Park is mid July through mid September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is typically fully open over Logan Pass, the high trails are mostly snow-free, and the lodges are running; outside that window, much of the park's alpine heart is snowbound.

Go mid July through mid September. Glacier's signature experience, the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass, depends on the plows: the alpine section typically opens fully sometime between late June and mid July, and the park says it has usually been open by early July. There is no set opening date; big snow years push it later. It typically stays open until the third Monday of October, weather permitting.

Once the road is open, July and August are the peak: wildflowers in the high meadows, mountain goats at Logan Pass, and trails like the Highline and Grinnell Glacier fully accessible. August also brings a real risk of wildfire smoke. September is the insider's month: crowds drop after Labor Day, the huckleberry bushes turn red, and the first snow dusts the peaks, though some lodges and services begin closing mid to late month.

Access rules change from year to year. Glacier required vehicle reservations in recent summers, then dropped them for 2026 in favor of a ticketed shuttle and time-limited parking at Logan Pass. Check the park's current rules before you plan. And do not write off the shoulder months entirely: in late May and June the lower Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to bikers and hikers before cars, one of the park's best-kept secrets.

Why go to Glacier National Park

Going-to-the-Sun Road

An engineering landmark completed in 1932, it climbs along cliffs to Logan Pass on the Continental Divide. It is one of the most spectacular drives in North America.

Alpine hiking without a mountaineering background

The Highline Trail, Grinnell Glacier, and Iceberg Lake put ordinary hikers in terrain that feels like the high Alps or the Canadian Rockies.

Intact wilderness

Grizzlies, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and wolverines still roam the full ecosystem, part of what locals call the Crown of the Continent.

Glaciers you can still see

The park's glaciers are shrinking fast. Grinnell Glacier and others remain visible from trails, and seeing them now carries weight.

Events and seasons worth planning around

Going-to-the-Sun Road full opening

Typically late June to mid July, varies with snowpack

There is no set opening date. The park says the road has typically been fully open by early July, and it posts plowing progress through spring.

JulyAugust

Wildflower season at Logan Pass

Mid July into August

Glacier lilies, beargrass, and alpine meadows bloom as the snow melts.

Huckleberry season

Late July into August

The berries grizzlies love and Montana bakes into everything. Make noise on trails; bears are feeding hard.

October

Larch season

Roughly mid October

Western larches turn gold along the park's western valleys and the North Fork.

Beat the crowds

  • Start early. Logan Pass parking fills quickly in summer, and 2026 added time-limited parking there; being on the road by 7am makes the day easier.
  • Base yourself on the east side at St. Mary or Many Glacier for quieter lodging and faster access to the best hikes.
  • Visit the second or third week of September for open roads, cooler weather, and far fewer people, accepting that some services close.
  • Explore Two Medicine or the North Fork when Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier are at their busiest.

Open or closed

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road's alpine section typically opens fully between late June and mid July and closes around the third Monday of October; the lower ends near Lake McDonald and St. Mary stay open longer. Snow can delay or shorten the season.
  • Vehicle reservation systems have changed year to year: required in recent summers, not required in 2026, when the park piloted a ticketed shuttle and time-limited Logan Pass parking. Check the park's current rules before planning.
  • In-park lodges, restaurants, and most campgrounds are seasonal, generally open from about late May or June to mid or late September. Many Glacier Hotel and others close before the road does.
  • Several trails close temporarily for bear activity at any time. Carry bear spray and check trail status daily.

With kids in tow

  • Trail of the Cedars, Avalanche Lake, and the Hidden Lake Overlook from Logan Pass are the classic family hikes, and the Junior Ranger program runs in summer.
  • Bear safety is essential here: carry bear spray, make noise on trails, and keep kids close. Grizzly encounters are part of the landscape.
  • The red bus tours are a great way for families to see Going-to-the-Sun Road without anyone having to drive the cliffside curves.
  • For homeschool families, late August into mid September is ideal: school groups gone, the road open, and glaciers, geology, and climate change as a living lesson.

Getting there

  • Glacier Park International (FCA) in Kalispell is about 30 minutes from West Glacier. Missoula is about two and a half hours; Great Falls serves the east side.
  • Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at West Glacier year-round and at East Glacier Park seasonally, one of the few national parks you can reach by long-distance train.
  • From Texas, expect one connection, usually through Denver, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, or Seattle. Summer car rentals at FCA sell out; book early.

When does Going-to-the-Sun Road close?

The full road typically stays open until the third Monday of October, weather permitting. Snow can close sections earlier, and the lower ends remain open longer.
