What July is like in Glacier National Park
July is when Glacier opens up fully. Highs are near 79F (26C) in the valleys, nights are cold up high, and Going-to-the-Sun Road is usually open over Logan Pass. Snow melts off the alpine meadows and the wildflowers follow. It is also peak season, so expect full parking lots, busy trails and the highest prices of the year in and around the park.
July suits almost everyone, especially families and first-time visitors who want the classic drive, the high trails and the lodges all running. If you hate crowds, aim for the second half of the month or the week after Labor Day in September. Early July can still have snow on some trails, so be ready to swap hikes.
Make the most of July
What is especially good about Glacier National Park this month.
Wildflowers at Logan Pass
Glacier lilies and beargrass bloom as the snow retreats from mid July. The Hidden Lake Overlook trail is an easy way to walk right through them.
The Highline Trail opens
Usually snow-free from mid July, the Highline has airy ledges and mountain goats. Arrange a shuttle for the one-way hike.
Huckleberries begin
Late in the month the first huckleberries ripen. Try them in pies and shakes in the gateway towns, and make noise on trails since bears are feeding.
Red bus tours
The historic open-top buses let the whole family enjoy the cliffside road with no one stuck behind the wheel.
What to pack for July
- Bear spray and a whistle for each hiker
- Layers, since Logan Pass can be 20 degrees colder than the valleys
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a brimmed hat for high-altitude sun
- A refillable water bottle and trail snacks
Our timing tip
Be on Going-to-the-Sun Road by 7am to get parking at Logan Pass, and check the current shuttle and parking rules before you arrive.

Things to do in Glacier National Park
Going-to-the-Sun Road
Drive it early in the morning or late in the day. Vehicle size limits apply on the alpine section; check the current rules for Logan Pass parking and shuttles.
Highline Trail from Logan Pass
Usually snow-free and fully open from mid July. Airy ledges, huge views, and mountain goats; arrange a shuttle for the one-way hike.
Many Glacier and Grinnell Glacier Trail
The best hiking hub in the park, with moose, bears, and a glacier at the end of the trail. Parking fills early.
Lake McDonald

Beat the crowds
- Start early. Logan Pass parking fills quickly in summer, and 2026 added time-limited parking there; being on the road by 7am makes the day easier.
- Base yourself on the east side at St. Mary or Many Glacier for quieter lodging and faster access to the best hikes.
- Visit the second or third week of September for open roads, cooler weather, and far fewer people, accepting that some services close.
- Explore Two Medicine or the North Fork when Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier are at their busiest.
Know before you go
- Going-to-the-Sun Road's alpine section typically opens fully between late June and mid July and closes around the third Monday of October; the lower ends near Lake McDonald and St. Mary stay open longer. Snow can delay or shorten the season.
- Vehicle reservation systems have changed year to year: required in recent summers, not required in 2026, when the park piloted a ticketed shuttle and time-limited Logan Pass parking. Check the park's current rules before planning.
- In-park lodges, restaurants, and most campgrounds are seasonal, generally open from about late May or June to mid or late September. Many Glacier Hotel and others close before the road does.
- Several trails close temporarily for bear activity at any time. Carry bear spray and check trail status daily.
