What February is like in Glacier National Park

February is still full winter in Glacier, with highs near 35F (2C), steady snow cover and very few visitors. The alpine road and high country are closed, and almost nothing inside the park is open beyond basic access at the lower ends. Prices in nearby towns stay low, and the days are slowly getting longer.

It suits experienced winter visitors, skiers and people who enjoy snowy quiet more than big views from the road. Families wanting easy hikes, wildflowers or the classic drive over Logan Pass should wait for mid July to mid September. If you want winter plus services, base yourself in Whitefish and treat the park as a day trip.

Make the most of February

What is especially good about Glacier National Park this month.

01

Deep winter solitude

February is one of the least visited months of the year. A ski along the lower valleys can feel like having a national park to yourself.

02

Whitefish Mountain Resort

Nearby Whitefish Mountain Resort is at its winter best, which makes a good base and a backup plan on stormy park days.

03

Animal tracks in fresh snow

Fresh snow shows who has been moving through the forest. It is a fun way to keep kids engaged on a short outing.

What to pack for February

  • Traction devices for your boots on packed, icy trails
  • A warm, windproof outer layer and insulated gloves
  • Sunglasses or goggles for glare off the snow
  • A winter emergency kit for the car, including a blanket and a shovel

Our timing tip

Rent skis or snowshoes in town the evening before so you can be in the park by late morning and out before the early dusk.

Beat the crowds

  • Start early. Logan Pass parking fills quickly in summer, and 2026 added time-limited parking there; being on the road by 7am makes the day easier.
  • Base yourself on the east side at St. Mary or Many Glacier for quieter lodging and faster access to the best hikes.
  • Visit the second or third week of September for open roads, cooler weather, and far fewer people, accepting that some services close.
  • Explore Two Medicine or the North Fork when Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier are at their busiest.

Know before you go

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road's alpine section typically opens fully between late June and mid July and closes around the third Monday of October; the lower ends near Lake McDonald and St. Mary stay open longer. Snow can delay or shorten the season.
  • Vehicle reservation systems have changed year to year: required in recent summers, not required in 2026, when the park piloted a ticketed shuttle and time-limited Logan Pass parking. Check the park's current rules before planning.
  • In-park lodges, restaurants, and most campgrounds are seasonal, generally open from about late May or June to mid or late September. Many Glacier Hotel and others close before the road does.
  • Several trails close temporarily for bear activity at any time. Carry bear spray and check trail status daily.
