The straight answer
The best time to visit Austin is mid March through May or October through mid November: warm days, cool enough evenings for patios and live music, bluebonnets in spring, and none of the 100F summer grind.
Come in spring or fall. From mid March through May, the Hill Country roadsides turn blue with bluebonnets, the swimming holes start calling, and patio season is in full swing. From October into mid November the heat finally breaks, the evenings are made for outdoor shows, and the city is at its most fun. This is home base for our family, and those are the months we tell every visiting friend to book.
The two festivals that put Austin on the map also shape its calendar. SXSW takes over downtown for about a week in mid March, usually overlapping Texas spring break, and hotel rates during those days can triple. Austin City Limits Music Festival fills Zilker Park across two weekends in early to mid October, and the Formula 1 race at Circuit of the Americas usually lands in the same autumn stretch. Great if you are coming for them; expensive and crowded if you are not.
Summer is the honest tradeoff. From June through September, highs sit in the mid to upper 90s F (35 to 37C) and stretches of 100F-plus days are normal, especially in July and August. Locals do not hide from it; they rearrange around it: Barton Springs at opening, a paddle on Lady Bird Lake before 9am, air conditioning through the afternoon, and the bats at dusk. If you can only come in summer, do it that way and it works.

Why go to Austin
Live music every night of the week
The Live Music Capital tag is earned: Red River, East Sixth, South Congress, and the Continental Club have shows seven nights a week, many with no cover. You do not need a festival pass to hear great music here.
Spring-fed swimming in the middle of a city
Barton Springs Pool holds about 68F (20C) all year, three acres of limestone-bottomed spring water inside Zilker Park. Deep Eddy, McKinney Falls, and the Hill Country holes extend the list.
Barbecue and breakfast tacos
Central Texas brisket is the real thing, and the famous pits still draw morning lines. Breakfast tacos from trailers and taquerias are the everyday currency, and cost a few dollars each.
The Hill Country on the doorstep
Wildflower drives, Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls, and the wineries and peach stands around Fredericksburg are all day trips. The city is the gateway to the best of Central Texas.
A million-plus bats at sunset
The Congress Avenue Bridge shelters the largest urban bat colony in North America. On summer evenings the emergence is one of the strangest, best free shows in the country.
Things to do, and when to do them
Barton Springs Pool
Go at opening on a weekday for the quiet swim. Check the city schedule for weekly cleaning closures and reduced winter hours before you drive over.
Congress Avenue Bridge bat flight
Roughly March through October, the Mexican free-tailed bats pour out at dusk. Watch from the bridge, the lawn by the Statesman site, or a boat on Lady Bird Lake. Late summer brings the biggest flights.
Texas State Capitol
Taller than the US Capitol and free to tour, with guided tours daily. The grounds are a shaded escape downtown and a good first stop with kids.
Bullock Texas State History Museum
The best one-stop primer on Texas, a block from the Capitol. A reliable air-conditioned half day in summer.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Peak bloom runs March through May. The spring plant sale and the bluebonnet fields make April the showpiece month.
Zilker Park and Lady Bird Lake
Rent a kayak or paddleboard, walk the 10-mile Butler Trail loop, and picnic on the Great Lawn. Before 9am in summer is the only sane window.
Hamilton Pool Preserve
A collapsed grotto with a 50-foot waterfall, west of town. Reservations are required, and swimming is often closed for water quality or falling rock, so check before you go.
LBJ Presidential Library
On the UT campus, strong on civil rights history and the 1960s. Quietest on weekday afternoons.
Events and seasons worth planning around
SXSW
March, usually overlapping Texas spring break
Film, music, and tech conference plus hundreds of showcases downtown. Hotels book out months ahead and rates spike across the whole city.
Rodeo Austin
March, often running alongside SXSW
Pro rodeo, livestock shows, and concerts at the Travis County Expo Center. A good family counterweight to SXSW.
Bluebonnet season
Late March to mid April, varies with winter rain
The state flower lines Hill Country highways. A wet fall and winter means a big year; a dry one means sparse fields.
Austin City Limits Music Festival
Two consecutive weekends in early to mid October
Dozens of acts on multiple stages in Zilker Park, same lineup both weekends. Zilker and Barton Springs access is limited for weeks around it.
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix
An autumn race weekend, usually in October
At Circuit of the Americas southeast of town. When it lands near ACL, the city sees back-to-back sold-out weekends.
Texas Longhorns home football
Saturdays, September through November
More than 100,000 fans at the stadium on campus. Game days jam I-35 and push up hotel rates citywide.
Trail of Lights
December
A mile-long walk of holiday light displays in Zilker Park. Weeknights early in the run are the least crowded.
Beat the crowds
- Check the SXSW, ACL, F1, and UT football calendars before you book anything. A random weekend in October can cost double the weekend before it.
- Stay midweek. Austin fills with weekend visitors and bachelor and bachelorette parties Thursday through Saturday; Sunday through Wednesday hotel rates drop hard.
- Barbecue lines: arrive before the pit opens on a weekday, or order ahead where it is offered. Many famous spots sell out of brisket by early afternoon.
- For bluebonnets, go on a weekday morning and drive past the famous roadside spots; fields a few miles farther out are just as good and nearly empty.
- Swimming holes: be at Barton Springs at opening and book Hamilton Pool the moment reservations open. Summer weekends at every spring fill fast.
Open or closed
- ACL Fest closes a large part of Zilker Park for weeks around the festival for setup and recovery, and Barton Springs parking and access are affected. Check city notices if a swim is on your October list.
- Barton Springs Pool closes for regular cleaning and occasional flood debris; a big rain upstream can shut it for days. Always check the pool page the morning you go.
- Hamilton Pool and many Hill Country swimming spots close swimming after heavy rain or for bacteria counts, sometimes for long stretches. Reservations do not guarantee a swim.
- Central Texas sits in Flash Flood Alley. Spring and fall storms can flood low-water crossings in minutes. Never drive into water over a road; turn around.
- Winter is mostly mild, but rare hard freezes and ice storms can close roads, schools, and businesses for a day or more because the city has little equipment for them.
With kids in tow
- With kids, the winning Austin day is a morning outdoors (springs, lake, or the Wildflower Center), an air-conditioned museum midday, and the bats at dusk. That rhythm works in every month but especially in summer.
- The Thinkery children's museum, the Austin Nature and Science Center in Zilker, and the Bullock's hands-on galleries are all reliable with younger kids.
- For homeschool families: the Capitol, the Bullock, and the LBJ Library make a tight three-day Texas history unit, and weekday mornings in November or February are blissfully uncrowded.
- SXSW and ACL are not built around small children. If you visit with kids during those windows, stay outside downtown and plan Hill Country days instead.
Getting there
- Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) has nonstops from most major US hubs and a growing list of international routes. Security lines run long on festival and race weekends; leave extra time.
- Driving: about 3 hours from Dallas or Houston and roughly 80 miles from San Antonio. I-35 through the city is chronically congested; SH 130 is the toll bypass.
- A car is close to essential for Hill Country day trips and swimming holes. Downtown, South Congress, and Zilker are walkable or a short rideshare apart.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
Austin timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Austin?
April. Bluebonnets, warm but not hot days, swimming holes opening up, and prices well below March. October has even better weather but pricier weekends because of ACL and the F1 race; November is the calmer fall alternative.
What is the cheapest time to visit Austin?
January, February, and the heat of July and August. Hotel rates bottom out, especially Sunday through Wednesday. Avoid SXSW in March and ACL weekends in October if price matters.
How hot is Austin in the summer?
Highs in the mid to upper 90s F (35 to 37C) from late June through early September, with many 100F days in July and August. Nights stay in the mid 70s F (about 24C). Plan outdoor time for early morning and evening.
When can you see the bats in Austin?
Roughly March through October, sometimes into early November. The colony is largest and flights are most dramatic in August when the young join. Emergence happens around sunset but varies night to night, so arrive early.
When is SXSW and ACL Fest?
SXSW runs in March, usually overlapping Texas spring break. Austin City Limits Music Festival runs across two weekends in early to mid October in Zilker Park. Exact dates vary each year; check the official sites.
Is there a bad allergy season in Austin?
Yes. Cedar fever from mountain cedar pollen peaks from December through February and can hit visitors who have never had allergies. Oak pollen follows in spring. Pack antihistamines in winter.
When do the bluebonnets bloom?
Usually late March through mid April, peaking in early April. Wet fall and winter weather means a bigger bloom. The Wildflower Center and the roads toward Burnet, Llano, and the Willow City Loop are classic viewing.
