Maine's window is short and glorious. From late June through August, the coast does exactly what the postcards promise: lobster shacks open on every wharf, Acadia's trails and carriage roads hum, and highs in the 70s F make it the Northeast's great summer escape. Then comes the second act: from mid September into early October, foliage sweeps south through the state while the summer crowds evaporate, and many argue this is the finest stretch of all.
The honest caveats sit at the edges. Much of coastal Maine's tourist infrastructure, seasonal restaurants, windjammers, whole stretches of Bar Harbor, closes or thins out from late October until Memorial Day. April is mud season inland, and blackfly season follows into early June in the woods. Winter Maine is real and beautiful, but it belongs mostly to skiers headed for Sugarloaf and Sunday River, not to coastal wanderers.
