What August is like in Osaka

August is Osaka's hottest month, with highs near 93F (34C) and heavy humidity. Obon in mid August adds holiday crowds, and trains, hotels and Universal Studios Japan run at maximum capacity. Late summer also brings typhoon risk that can halt trains or Kansai Airport operations for a day or so.

Avoid it if you can. This month is only for travelers with no other window. If you must go, plan outdoor sightseeing before 10am, spend afternoons indoors and keep evenings for food. October and November give you far better weather.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Osaka this month.

01

Night food crawls

Shinsekai's kushikatsu and Dotonbori's street food are best after dark, when the heat eases.

02

Kaiyukan escape

The aquarium's cool halls and whale sharks are a lifesaver on scorching afternoons.

03

Early Nara

Arriving in Nara early means you see Todaiji and the deer before the heat and the tour buses.

What to pack for August

  • Very light, breathable clothing
  • A cooling towel and handheld fan
  • Electrolyte packets
  • A compact umbrella for sun and storms

Our timing tip

Avoid mid August Obon dates for theme parks and intercity trains, when crowds peak.

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid Golden Week (roughly April 29 to May 5) and Obon (mid August) entirely if you can. All of Japan travels, and hotel prices spike.
  • During cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons, stay in Osaka and take early trains to Kyoto. Arrive at the big Kyoto temples at opening, then retreat.
  • Hit Kuromon Market and Osaka Castle before 9am. Dotonbori is better late, after the day-tripper crowds thin.
  • Book Universal Studios Japan for a weekday outside school holidays and buy timed entry for Super Nintendo World in advance.

Know before you go

  • New Year (roughly December 29 to January 3): many museums, some restaurants, and small businesses close. Shrines are packed for first prayers.
  • Golden Week and Obon: everything is open, but trains, hotels, and theme parks run at maximum crowds.
  • Typhoons in late summer and early autumn can halt trains, close Kansai Airport operations, and shut outdoor attractions for a day or so.
  • Many museums close one day a week, often Monday; check hours for anything specific.
