What August is like in Grand Canyon

August stays hot, with rim highs near 81F (27C), and monsoon thunderstorms build most afternoons. The storms bring dramatic skies but also lightning and flash flood risk in side canyons. Crowds are high for most of the month, then ease late as schools go back. Prices stay near their summer peak.

It suits families tied to school holidays who stick to the rim and plan mornings well. It is a poor month for long below-rim hikes. If you can shift your dates, late September or October gives you cooler weather and clearer skies.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Grand Canyon this month.

01

Storm-watching

Monsoon clouds and rainbows over the canyon make for memorable photos, best watched from sheltered spots.

02

Late-month calm

Crowds thin in the last week or two of August, while the weather stays summery.

03

Grand Canyon Railway

The train from Williams saves you the parking hunt on busy summer days.

What to pack for August

  • A rain jacket for afternoon storms
  • Sun protection and a hat
  • Plenty of water
  • Quick-dry clothes

Our timing tip

Head out early each day and avoid narrow side canyons in the afternoon, when flash flood risk rises with the storms.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
  • Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
  • Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
  • Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.

Know before you go

  • The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
  • The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
  • Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
  • Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
