The straight answer
The best time to visit the Grand Canyon is March through May or September through November, when South Rim days are mild and the inner canyon is not dangerously hot; the South Rim is open all year, while the North Rim is a roughly mid May to mid October destination.
Go in spring (March through May) or fall (September through November). The South Rim sits around 7,000 feet, so those months bring rim highs in the 60s and 70s F (about 16C to 24C), while the canyon floor at Phantom Ranch stays hikeable rather than lethal. Summer is the most popular season, but the inner canyon regularly passes 100F (38C), and the park warns hikers every year about heat illness on the Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails.
The South Rim, which is where most visitors go, is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Winter there is quiet and beautiful, with snow on the rim and the canyon's colors sharpened by the cold light, though icy trails demand traction devices. The North Rim is a different place: about 1,000 feet higher, far more remote, and historically open for visitor services only from roughly mid May to mid October, with the highway closed by snow in winter.
One recent change matters for planning: the Dragon Bravo Fire in 2025 destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim and closed that side of the park for the rest of that season. The North Rim reopened in mid May 2026 with its paved roads and main viewpoints open, but lodging and services are limited and the North Kaibab Trail was badly damaged, so check the park's current North Rim status before building a trip around it.

Why go to Grand Canyon
The scale
About 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. No photograph prepares you for the first look from Mather Point.
Two billion years of geology
The canyon walls expose rock layers spanning close to two billion years, with the Vishnu Schist at the bottom among the oldest exposed rock in North America.
The inner canyon
Hiking below the rim, or rafting the Colorado River through it, is one of the great wilderness experiences in the United States.
The night sky
Grand Canyon is an International Dark Sky Park, and ranger astronomy programs run year-round.
Things to do, and when to do them
South Rim viewpoints along Hermit Road
Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 to November 30; ride the free shuttle to Hopi Point and Mohave Point for sunset.
Desert View Watchtower
The Mary Colter-designed tower at the east end of the South Rim, 25 miles from the village and less crowded at sunrise.
Bright Angel Trail
The classic below-rim trail from the village. Turn around at a sensible point; the park strongly warns against hiking to the river and back in one day.
South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point or Cedar Ridge
The best short below-rim view hike. Steep, exposed, and without water, so go early.
Rafting the Colorado River
Multi-day trips run roughly April through October and book a year or more ahead with licensed outfitters.
Grand Canyon Railway
Vintage train service from Williams to the South Rim, running year-round.
North Rim
Higher, cooler, and far quieter, with Bright Angel Point and Point Imperial. Seasonal only, and reopened in 2026 with limited services after the 2025 fire.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Grand Canyon Star Party
About a week in early to mid June
Amateur astronomers set up telescopes on the rim for free public viewing each night.
Monsoon season
Roughly July to mid September
Dramatic afternoon storms and lightning. Get off exposed points when thunder starts, and avoid narrow side canyons.
Colorado River rafting season
Roughly April through October
Commercial trips fill well in advance; permit lotteries govern private trips.
Beat the crowds
- Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
- Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
- Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
- Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.
- Walk the Rim Trail west of Bright Angel Lodge or east of Yavapai Point; within 15 minutes, the crowds thin sharply.
Open or closed
- The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
- The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
- Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
- Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
- Weather can close roads and trails at any time: winter storms on the rim, and flash floods or heat warnings below it.
With kids in tow
- Stay on the Rim Trail with young kids. It is paved in the village area and offers big views without the danger of exposed below-rim trails.
- The Junior Ranger program and the Yavapai Geology Museum make the canyon's age and scale concrete for kids.
- Do not attempt below-rim hikes with children in summer heat; the climb back up is where families get into trouble.
- For homeschool families, the canyon is the best geology classroom in the country, and March and April, outside spring break weeks, or September and October bring comfortable weather and weekday quiet.
Getting there
- Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is about three and a half to four hours by car from the South Rim, and Las Vegas is about four and a half hours. Flagstaff (FLG) is about 90 minutes.
- From Texas, fly nonstop to Phoenix from Dallas, Houston, or Austin, then drive north through Flagstaff; pairing the trip with Sedona is easy.
- The North Rim is about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from the South Rim despite being about 10 miles across the canyon.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
