What June is like in Grand Canyon

June is the driest, sunniest month, with rim highs near 81F (27C). Down in the canyon, though, temperatures pass 100F (38C) and hiking there is dangerous. Crowds and prices hit their peak as summer vacation starts, and in-park lodging often sells out months ahead. The Grand Canyon Star Party is the month's special event.

It suits families who plan to enjoy the canyon from the rim and stargazers. It is a poor pick for serious hikers, unless they start before dawn and turn back early. For comfortable hiking and fewer people, choose April, May or late September to October.

Make the most of June

What is especially good about Grand Canyon this month.

01

Grand Canyon Star Party

For about a week in early to mid June, amateur astronomers set up telescopes on the rim for free public viewing each night.

02

Clear skies for sunsets

The dry air gives crisp sunsets at Hopi Point and Mohave Point, reached by the free Hermit Road shuttle.

03

Rim Trail walks

The paved Rim Trail near the village is the safe, easy way for families to see the canyon in the heat.

What to pack for June

  • A wide-brim hat and strong sunscreen
  • Electrolyte packets and plenty of water
  • A light jacket for chilly rim nights at the Star Party
  • A red-light flashlight for stargazing

Our timing tip

Plan any below-rim hike to start before sunrise, and spend the hot midday hours at the visitor center or the Yavapai Geology Museum.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
  • Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
  • Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
  • Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.

Know before you go

  • The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
  • The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
  • Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
  • Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
