What July is like in Grand Canyon

July is the month to avoid if you can. Rim highs reach about 84F (29C), the inner canyon often passes 105F (41C), and crowds and prices are at their peak. Monsoon season starts, bringing afternoon storms with lightning that makes exposed rim viewpoints hazardous. Entrance lines back up at mid morning.

If summer is your only option, keep to the rim and plan around early mornings. Below-rim hikes with kids are a bad idea now. For a far better trip, come in September or October, when the heat breaks and the summer crowds are gone.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Grand Canyon this month.

01

Monsoon skies

Towering afternoon storm clouds over the canyon are dramatic to watch, from a safe spot away from exposed points.

02

Empty sunrises

Even in peak season, the rim is nearly empty at dawn, and the light is better than at sunset.

03

The quieter North Rim

If it is open with services, the higher North Rim is cooler and far less crowded. Check current status before driving.

What to pack for July

  • A rain jacket for afternoon storms
  • A wide-brim hat and sunscreen
  • A large water bottle and electrolyte packets
  • Lightweight, breathable clothes

Our timing tip

Do your sightseeing from sunrise to late morning, and leave exposed viewpoints as soon as you hear thunder.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
  • Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
  • Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
  • Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.

Know before you go

  • The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
  • The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
  • Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
  • Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
