What January is like in Grand Canyon

January is the quietest month on the South Rim. Highs sit near 43F (6C), nights drop well below freezing, and snow can dust the red rock, which looks remarkable. Viewpoints are nearly empty and in-park lodging is easier to get and cheaper. The South Rim stays open all year, while the North Rim is closed for winter.

This month suits photographers, couples and anyone who wants the canyon without crowds and is happy to dress warmly. It is not ideal for below-rim hiking, since upper trails are icy and need traction devices. If you want easy hiking weather, come in April or October instead.

Make the most of January

What is especially good about Grand Canyon this month.

01

Snow on the canyon

A fresh snowfall on the red and orange layers is one of the most striking sights in the park, and you may have it almost to yourself.

02

Drive Hermit Road yourself

Hermit Road is open to private cars in winter, so you can stop at Hopi Point and Mohave Point on your own schedule.

03

Grand Canyon Railway

The vintage train from Williams runs year-round and is a cozy way to arrive on a snowy day.

What to pack for January

  • A warm insulated jacket, hat and gloves
  • Microspikes or other traction for icy trails
  • Waterproof boots
  • A thermos for hot drinks at sunrise

Our timing tip

Check road and weather conditions before driving up, since winter storms can briefly close roads, and plan a sunrise stop at Desert View.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
  • Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
  • Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
  • Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.

Know before you go

  • The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
  • The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
  • Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
  • Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
