What May is like in Grand Canyon

May brings warm, very dry days on the rim, with highs near 70F (21C) and cool nights. The North Rim traditionally opens around mid May, though after the 2025 fire it runs with limited services, so check its status first. Crowds and prices climb toward summer levels, and the inner canyon is heating up fast.

It suits families, road-trippers and hikers who start early. People planning long below-rim hikes should go at dawn and turn back before midday heat. If you want cooler inner-canyon hiking, April or October is the better choice.

Make the most of May

What is especially good about Grand Canyon this month.

01

North Rim season begins

The higher, quieter North Rim usually opens in mid May, with Bright Angel Point and Point Imperial. Services are limited after the 2025 fire.

02

Long, dry days

Clear skies and long daylight make it easy to catch both sunrise and sunset from the rim.

03

Rafting in full swing

Colorado River trips are running, with comfortable weather on the water.

What to pack for May

  • Sun protection: a wide-brim hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A warm layer for cool mornings and evenings
  • At least two liters of water per person for any hike
  • Hiking shoes with good grip

Our timing tip

If you hike below the rim, start at first light and be heading back up by mid morning, before the inner canyon heats up.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at a viewpoint for sunrise. The rim is nearly empty at dawn in every month, and the light is better than at sunset.
  • Enter through the East Entrance at Desert View rather than the South Entrance, where lines back up in summer mid mornings.
  • Visit November through February for the emptiest South Rim; snow on the canyon is a genuine highlight, not a compromise.
  • Stay inside the park or in Tusayan to avoid the drive from Flagstaff or Williams at peak entry times.

Know before you go

  • The South Rim, including the South Entrance and the East Entrance at Desert View, is open 24 hours a day, all year.
  • The North Rim traditionally operates from about mid May to mid October, with Highway 67 closing for winter snow. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim reopened for 2026 with its roads and viewpoints open but limited services and the North Kaibab Trail damaged; check the park's current North Rim status before you go.
  • Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; use the free shuttle. In winter you can drive it.
  • Phantom Ranch and in-park lodging book through lotteries or far-ahead reservations; summer rim lodging often sells out many months in advance.
