What August is like in Istanbul

August is the hottest month, with highs near 85F (29C) and humid air. Many locals head to the coast, but the old city stays busy with visitors, and prices remain high. Everything is open and ferries run full schedules. The heat is the main challenge, not closures. Expect humid nights, too, so a hotel with good air conditioning is worth the extra cost.

Use the same plan as July: sightsee early, rest midday, live at night. Families on school break will manage fine with that rhythm. If you can move your dates, September brings golden light and easier weather.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Istanbul this month.

01

Asian side evenings

Kadikoy's streets fill with people and food once the sun drops.

02

Bosphorus breezes

Long ferry rides are the most pleasant way to sightsee in the heat.

03

Late night strolls

The squares between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are beautiful and cooler after dark when both are lit.

What to pack for August

  • Light, loose clothing
  • A scarf to cover shoulders and hair in mosques
  • Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses
  • Electrolyte packets for hot days

Our timing tip

Plan a slow, shady midday break, and head out again around 5pm when the light softens.

Ramadan in Istanbul

Dates shift about 11 days earlier each year; check the current window

The city functions fully and tourist restaurants serve all day, but evenings transform: iftar picnics fill the Sultanahmet squares and mosques glow with lighted messages strung between minarets. Museums may shorten hours around the Eid holiday that ends the month.

01

Hagia Sophia

A 1,500-year-old dome that redefined architecture, now an active mosque. Visits pause during the five daily prayer times; dress modestly and go early or late in the day.

02

Topkapi Palace

The Ottoman sultans' palace complex, including the Harem, which is worth its separate ticket. Closed Tuesdays; give it a full half day.

03

The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)

Six minarets and a cascade of domes facing Hagia Sophia across the square. Free entry outside prayer times; evenings when both are lit are the postcard.

04

Basilica Cistern

A Byzantine underground water palace held up by a forest of columns, including the famous Medusa-head bases. Deliciously cool on a hot day.

05

A Bosphorus ferry or cruise

The public ferries between the European and Asian sides cost pocket change; longer Bosphorus cruises run to the strait's upper reaches. Sunset sailings win.

Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar

Go with time to get lost. Closed Sundays, and the surrounding han courtyards and rooftop workshops are where the atmosphere hides.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at Hagia Sophia or Topkapi at opening; by late morning in season the queues stretch across the square. Save the Blue Mosque for the evening light.
  • Use prayer times as your scheduler: mosque visiting pauses five times a day, so slot the cisterns, museums, and bazaars into those windows and the mosques between them.
  • Cross to the Asian side for at least half a day. Kadikoy and Uskudar carry a fraction of Sultanahmet's tourism and most of its flavor.
  • Museum-pass math usually favors buying online ahead in high season, mostly for the queue-skipping rather than the savings.

Know before you go

  • Istanbul has no off-season shutdown: the sights, bazaars, and restaurants run year-round, and winter simply means shorter queues and softer prices.
  • Weekly closures to plan around: Topkapi Palace closes Tuesdays, the Grand Bazaar closes Sundays, and mosques pause visits during the five daily prayer times, longest at Friday midday prayers.
  • During Ramadan the city stays fully functional for visitors: restaurants in tourist areas serve all day, but some local lokantas open only after sunset, and the Eid holidays at the month's end bring crowded transport and some shortened museum hours. The dates shift about 11 days earlier each year.
  • On the two major Eid holidays and October 29, Republic Day, banks and some sights close or shorten hours while the streets get festive; check specific museums for holiday schedules.
