What February is like in Istanbul
February is still deep low season. Highs hang near 49F (9C) with gray spells and the chance of snow. Prices are among the lowest of the year and the big sights have room to breathe. The covered Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar feel made for this weather. Days start to lengthen by the end of the month.
This month suits couples, solo travelers, and anyone happy to trade sunshine for space and value. Families with small kids may find the cold and hills tiring. If you want sun and flowers, wait for April.
Make the most of February
What is especially good about Istanbul this month.
The covered bazaars
The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are warm, dry, and full of color when the weather is not. Remember the Grand Bazaar closes Sundays.
Kadikoy food crawl
Take the ferry to the Asian side and graze the Kadikoy market streets, a cozy winter lunch.
A rainy-day museum with kids
The Rahmi M. Koc museum on the Golden Horn, with its submarine and vintage vehicles, is a strong pick on a wet day.
What to pack for February
- A warm, water resistant jacket
- Layers for heated indoor spaces
- Sturdy, waterproof walking shoes
- A compact umbrella
Our timing tip
Cross to Kadikoy on a public ferry around midday, when the market streets are busiest and the light on the water is best.

What's on in February
Ramadan in Istanbul
Dates shift about 11 days earlier each year; check the current window
The city functions fully and tourist restaurants serve all day, but evenings transform: iftar picnics fill the Sultanahmet squares and mosques glow with lighted messages strung between minarets. Museums may shorten hours around the Eid holiday that ends the month.
Things to do in Istanbul
Hagia Sophia
A 1,500-year-old dome that redefined architecture, now an active mosque. Visits pause during the five daily prayer times; dress modestly and go early or late in the day.
Topkapi Palace
The Ottoman sultans' palace complex, including the Harem, which is worth its separate ticket. Closed Tuesdays; give it a full half day.
The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)
Six minarets and a cascade of domes facing Hagia Sophia across the square. Free entry outside prayer times; evenings when both are lit are the postcard.
Basilica Cistern
A Byzantine underground water palace held up by a forest of columns, including the famous Medusa-head bases. Deliciously cool on a hot day.
A Bosphorus ferry or cruise
The public ferries between the European and Asian sides cost pocket change; longer Bosphorus cruises run to the strait's upper reaches. Sunset sailings win.
Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar
Go with time to get lost. Closed Sundays, and the surrounding han courtyards and rooftop workshops are where the atmosphere hides.
Beat the crowds
- Be at Hagia Sophia or Topkapi at opening; by late morning in season the queues stretch across the square. Save the Blue Mosque for the evening light.
- Use prayer times as your scheduler: mosque visiting pauses five times a day, so slot the cisterns, museums, and bazaars into those windows and the mosques between them.
- Cross to the Asian side for at least half a day. Kadikoy and Uskudar carry a fraction of Sultanahmet's tourism and most of its flavor.
- Museum-pass math usually favors buying online ahead in high season, mostly for the queue-skipping rather than the savings.
Know before you go
- Istanbul has no off-season shutdown: the sights, bazaars, and restaurants run year-round, and winter simply means shorter queues and softer prices.
- Weekly closures to plan around: Topkapi Palace closes Tuesdays, the Grand Bazaar closes Sundays, and mosques pause visits during the five daily prayer times, longest at Friday midday prayers.
- During Ramadan the city stays fully functional for visitors: restaurants in tourist areas serve all day, but some local lokantas open only after sunset, and the Eid holidays at the month's end bring crowded transport and some shortened museum hours. The dates shift about 11 days earlier each year.
- On the two major Eid holidays and October 29, Republic Day, banks and some sights close or shorten hours while the streets get festive; check specific museums for holiday schedules.
