Cochem, Germany
The Mosel at its most storybook: a riverside tangle of half-timbered houses under the Reichsburg, a hilltop castle rebuilt in fairy-tale Gothic Revival style, surrounded by some of the steepest riesling vineyards in the world. Wine-festival season in late summer is the town at full color.
Obidos
Obidos, Portugal
A whitewashed, bougainvillea-draped village enclosed by an intact medieval wall you can walk on top of, an hour north of Lisbon. Sip ginjinha, the local sour-cherry liqueur, from an edible chocolate cup, and time a midsummer visit to the town's medieval market if you can.

Kaysersberg, France
An Alsace wine village of half-timbered houses and a fortified bridge, birthplace of Albert Schweitzer and voted France's favorite village in 2017. It sits on the wine route near Colmar, and its December Christmas market is among the region's most atmospheric.
